Hey,

I'm having a bit of a problem troubleshooting this picture error that I'm getting when I watch certain Blu-Rays on my Playstation 3. On some (so far, its been Casino Royale CE, Heroes S2 and Chungking Express) Blu-Rays I get this line of dots that appears during the menu screens that does not disappear during the movie. I have tried to change my HDMI cable and I have taken my Playstation to another Television (mine is a Sony KDL46S4100) but the same error occurred. I have emailed Sony Support (no help) and I talked to a rep in the sony store who had never heard of the problem I described.

Thanks

No, I don't think its overscanning, the dots don't appear at the edge of the frame, with Heroes and Chungking Express, the dots appear in the picture, in the same placement as in the pictures I posted. Also, I might point out that the dots are slightly green (the pictures washed out some color).

I think that the problem has something to do with the menu screens. I just put in my Wall-E and then the menu screen popped up (this is actually when the problem occurs on all the discs I've seen) the screen was covered in these dotted lines.

If I brought up the onscreen menu, most of them would go away (a line of dots would follow the menu as it popped up and down on the screen) but the top line would remain constant yet again.

All kind of help/advice is appreciated. thanks again.

possible GPU issue?

Overheating?

I don't think its an issue with overheating, as it only happens with some Blu-Rays, even when it hasn't been on for a long time.

GPU it could be, it might have something to do with the way that it processes the menus and the video at different resolutions. Does that sound right? But would that explain why its only some Blu Rays and not others?

Since it's only happening on some discs I'd say it's an issue with the Blu-ray disc. It occurs on separate TVs but with the same PS3. Can you try another PS3? Maybe a friend has one? You could rule out your PS3 is causing the issue if the same issue comes up on another Blu-ray player.

Is there any movement/variations in the dots while the video is playing? If so does it stop when the movie is paused?

I don't think its the disc because my brother has the same Blu-Rays (Wall-E and Chungking Express) but no dots (he is also using a playstation). Also, the placement of the error is consistent on all the discs that I have seen the problem on (always at the top of the screen). However, I believe the reason that Wall-E has more errors on the screen is that the menu has more interactive objects on the menu, as this seems to trigger the dots.

There is no movement of the line/dots when the disc is playing, no.

Based on your last post it seems less likely it's the disc, but I still wouldn't rule it out. Can you try your brothers discs on your PS3? As you mentioned earlier there may be a resolution switch between the menu and the video, but then you still have an issue with dots appearing at the top of the video.

This is a tricky one, but I would try eliminating one element at a time (as you've already started) and see which piece is causing the issue. TV, PS3, Disc, Receiver (if you were using one). Can you hook up your PS3 with component or composite cables?

Yeah if your brother also has a PS3 see if you can swap and see if you still have the same problem.

My personal guess is that it is hardware related to your PS3 or TV. I doubt it is the discs since it is happening on several discs for you.

I guess your firmware is up to date (2.53)? Some movies will even prompt you to update the PS3's BD software if your PS3 is online. Wall-E did for me.

Yeah, my firmwares up to date. I just got off the phone with Playstation Tech Support, they told me to get component cables and try those. I don't think that's gonna work though, because I've tried it on composite and the lines are still there, though less apparent. They also told me to try different settings on my tv, though I dont know which ones I would change, I have it on Full Pixel right now (same thing on both full pixel and normal settings) wide mode is full and auto wide is off. I don't think playing with picture modes is going to do anything either.

Take you PS3 back to the store you purchased it from and get a replacement.

Think it might be a bit late to return it... I got it at best buy in April, only noticed this error when I got an HDTV. As far as I know, my only option (if somethings wrong with it, which no one at sony seems to think is the case) would be to send it back to sony to be repaired/replaced, right?
