Yes, its a little early but with the start of the holiday season coming, I always amaze myself with how much money I go out and spend on 3-6 new Christmas discs of music.

Yet, I often find myself returning to a few of these generic compilation discs of mostly traditional material I already owned. The irony is some of them were just randomly accquired discs in those impulse buys of those 2-4 disc generic compilation you grab off the rack after a quick glance hoping they are as good as the packaging suggests. You often find a real gem once in a while of some orchestras/symphonies doing really great performances of the traditional material or some female vocalist who did a disc and for some reason her intpretations just really shine.

I have lent out or lost a few over the years and spent many an hour shopping/browsing to try to replace them. Several are suspected kidnap victims to various family members who seem to have the disc but no box or cover, while I still have the disc box but they "swear"its their original pruchase copy, lol.

I am going to pick a few out of my shelf of 40 or so(accquired over a lifetime) or so and post them here and thought we chould share what we thought was the best of the rich cheerful holiday music out there with each other.

I grabbed this handfull off the shelf that always make it into the player each year before I start looking for others.

SleighRide- from the Classic Christmas Favorites Series of discs they put out

A Winter's Solstice V - Windham Hill Artists

In The Nutcracker Mood - Glenn Miller Orchestra

Christmas Through Your Eyes - Gloria Estefan

Christmas In The Mood (Boxed Set of 4) - Glenn Miller Orchestra

Vienna Boys Choir -Christmas Favorites

Barbara Streisand - A Christmas Album

Carpenters - Christmas Portrait

A note on the Winters Solstice V disc, they put an entire series of instrumentals on discs ( there are at least Vol I.- VIII )and some of them are more mood pieces than traditional Christmas songs but guests love them and request them every year when they visit.

I'm having a big christmas party the first weekend in december. I plan to show off my new home theater. I need to find the best christmas dvd, (movie or christmas music concert) that would show off my theater.

Christmas Vacation looks too grainy. The Grinch looks kind of grainy too. Santa Claus 2 looks real good. It's a Wonderful Life is great but in B&W. I'm curious if anyone has a "real reference" list for chistmas movies or concert dvd that would really shine.

Greg

Pam,

Is the Christmas Extraordinaire a DVD-A or DVD-video ? On Amazon it looks like just a audio version.

Thanks,

Greg
