Long time reader, first time... a quasi newB

Just bought a Liteon 5005 and hooked up to the Dish PVR510. Recording was fine but the PQ was not impressive at all even using the HQ mode. Actually I could see the degrading happened on INPUT channel when recording started. The picture lost sharpness and contrast and equals to a VCD/VHS level quality.

Here is the connection:

Dish PVR510 receiver to Liteon DVD recorder RF in (coax)

Liteon DVD recorder RF out to TV (coax)

Dish PVR510 output to Liteon A/V input (S-video)

Liteon output to TV input (composite, blaming the senior TV)

I went to "Source" menu, select Channel 3 (according to the settings on PVR).

What could be the problem, given the PQ degraded even before the recording? Wrong hook-up? Or just the normal satellite digital-analog downgrading? I saw other posts said the degrading was minimum (by naked eyes).

Thanks in advance!

I just returned a Liteon 5101 after noticing the same thing you just mentioned. I bought the iLo DVDRHD04 (with hard drive) that is also made by Liteon. The picture quality was much better so I assumed that it was the DVDR. You may try another recorder. If you're seeing a decent picture on your tv, no matter how old, then that's probably it.

Huh ? You are Recording thru the TV Tuner Input of the Lite-on 5005 ?

No wonder the picture is less than great.

Yet you have a S-Video cable connecting the Dish Sat output to the Lite-on input. I can't fathom what your doing.

There is no purpose to the RF CoaX connections in any of this .

AFAIK !!! ;-}

How very true, his connections will only yeld poor quality results, the 5005 (when connected directly) yelds an excellent PQ as many of the professional reviews have mentioned.

I have my Liteon 5005 set up with analog composite input from digital cable dvr box and picture looks fine.

I did once notice a blurry picture, a quick off and on, fixed it right up, don't know what that's about but since then PQ was right on.

Today, i get a Pioneer 420 with HD inside, and will compare, but i don't expect picture quality to be much better, just more features.

I really have gotten used to the liteon 5005 for it's simplicity. And the simple remote is easy to find the pause button when pausing during commercial breaks. I don't know if i'll end up keeping both recorders but i suspect for the low price i got both, it's the same as getting one expensive machine, so i just might keep both, and put the liteon in the bedroom.

And i agree for a better picture record from the analog inputs, not thru channel 3 on the internal tuner, you lose stereo that way, i read.

Your first problem is using the RF input. That's the worst possible way to hook the 5005 up. Use the S-Video if possible, or even the composite over the RF. With the RF, you're losing stereo right off the bat, and you're also losing resolution.

I've made some recordings from my DirecTV DVR via s-video, and they look pretty good to me.
