Liveware update allows decoding DD from external SPDIF

1149 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  minaelromany
I know most folks use DD passthru and use their home theater system for decoding, but the topic of decoding DD on the htpc from an external source has come up before. It looks like its now possible, at least with an Audigy, courtesy of a Liveware update from 'Hewpaq':

If you decide to test this newer version of Liveware (warning, its something like a 377Mb download!) on a non-hewpaq machine, the install may fail the first time. If so, simply go to where the installation process placed the decompressed the files, find one called CTOem.cfg (in the setup folder) and either rename or delete it. Then doubleclick setup.exe to install...

When you're done (and rebooted), in the Creative Audio HQ, you'll see a tab called 'Digital Input'. In the pulldown list you should have:

Default

SPDIF Bypass

AC-3 SPDIF-in decode

Hi Sherbona ,

Is these drivers valid for my Live Platinum 5.1 card??

Also can this be done with my card -decoding DD from external sources I mean-??

Can you give a link for this download?

Thanks in advance

Hewpaq lists Audigy and SB Live Value 5.1 as dependencies ('corporate' for requirements). I've read in newsgroups that Creative is moving towards a 'unified' type of driver - my guess, and that's all it is, is that it will work for Live Platinum 5.1 as well. The Creative usenet newsgroup might have more info about this from other users.

Also, I belive you need to have WinXP (Pro or Home) for this one.

Yep (I've installed but haven't tested it yet). Keep in mind this should work for an external source that is DD bitstream connected to the Audigy/5.1 S/PDIF in. It won't decode DTS.

Go to the link in my previous post and scrolldown. Towards the bottom there is a link called 'Download Now' which is what you need.

I'm interested in hearing how this turns out. I'm currently using my HTPC as a pre-amp going straight to my amps with a Delta 410 card, but need a way to decode external sources (DSS receiver, VCR). If installing a second sound card is a cheaper alternative to buying a stand-alone processor, I may be persuaded to go that route. I assume that the Delta cards could peacefully coexist with the Soundblaster cards, yes?

Hi K-Wood,

I run an Audigy and an MAudio 1010LT in one of my computers with no conflicts so far.

I just tested the Audigy for decoding DD based on its S/PDIF in and it works. It still can't decode dolby pro-logic (e.g., analog audio from a VCR video tape); however it can apply 'cmss' to an external analog which is similar effect/functionality. Also, keep in mind the Audigy can't decode DTS.

Here's the test configuration in case this helps anyone:

Machine A, WinXP Pro:

> Philips Acoustic Edge soundcard with its S/PDIF set for DD passthrough

> PowerDVD set to S/PDIF

Machine B, WinXP Pro:

> 2 soundcards; MAudio 1010LT and Audigy EX

> Audigy Livedrive; S/PDIF-in (coax) from the Acoustic Edge S/PDIF

> AudigyHQ; digital-input set to "AC-3 SPDIF-in decode"

> Audigy line-outs (front and rear speakers) connected to MAudio line-ins

> MAudio set so that its line-outs use its line-ins as source.

Oh my God !

It took me 75+ hours to download this goddamn file and now it seems that it is corrupt !

It won't even decompress the files included .

I am not gonna download it again UNLESS some one tries it on SB Live Platinum 5.1 and give BIG upgrade for the card ..

Sounds like we're only talking 4.0 decode here.... ???

Jim,

I had the Audigy set for 4.0 speakers, but I could have just as easily set it to 5.1 - was that the question?

Edit:

Just to clarify - I normally use PowerDVD in conjunction with the MAudio 1010LT on 'machine B'. When I do, I have PDVD set to "6 speaker" mode and then downmix/reroute via Cliff's drivers (which are so cool) instead of doing it in PDVD. Decoding external DD via the Audigy was a 'proof of concept' test for me since I have one of those cards in that machine as well. These days I normally use the Audigy just for upmixing external 2 channel analog via 'cmss' and the 1010LT for most everything else.

well, can you connect more than the front/rear line outs to the 410 card?

I don't know, I have MAudio 1010LT. The 1010LT has 8 analog inputs (2 balanced (XLR), 6 unbalanced (RCA).
Sherbona, I couldn't get your link to work. Is there a problem with their site?
[email protected]

All the mirror site links are dead ..

Are they the same 377 MB size?
Actually file2.mydrivers.com still worked for me.

All workings links are 377 MB.
Can anybody tell me if this update will also allow you to plug in a device to the SPDIF input, and have it pass the DD or DTS signal thru it, and out the SPDIF output on the SB5.1? If I'm not mistaken, it used to try to play back the raw signal as opposed to passing it thru.

The reason I am interested is that I want to be able to connect the output from my AccessDTV card into the SB5.1, then output both using just 1 cable. I don't like connecting 2 cables to my external decoder, I'd rather just use up 1 input on the decoder. Thanks.

oooppsss... meant 1010LT, not 410.... can all 6 channels be "anologe'd" from the audigy to the 1010LT line ins?

anogaijin,

With a livedrive I think it should be able to. After installing this software, the AudioHQ > Device Controls > Digital Input tab shows the following choices for S/PDIF; Default, SPDIF Bypass, and AC-3 SPDIF-in decode (I don't remember what was there before). The middle one should pass S/PDIF input directly to the S/PDIF output (undecoded ...). In fact, it should be possible to feed a coax S/PDIF signal in, and get a optical SPDIF signal out (or vice a versa) - sort of a built in converter. Of course this is an Audigy EX, but my *guess* is that this would work the same with a Live!5.1 that has a livedrive.

Sure. On the Audigy I would use these connectors:

__Line Out > FL/FR signal

__Rear Out > RL/RR signal

__Analog/Digital Out Connector > Set to output analog, Center/Sub signal

Connect the above Audigy connectors to the 1010LT's analog inputs.

Set the Audigy 'Surround Mixer' to 5.1 speakers and the bass redirection as needed.

Set each of the 1010LT's analog outputs to use the relevant analog input as its source.

Connect the 1010LT analog outputs to amp/speakers

Voila!

In the above configuration the 1010LT is merely serving as a pass-through device so that one doesn't have to physically change the amp/speaker connections to/from the Audigy/1010LT. Which brings up your excellent point - if K-Wood is using a 410, which has less analog inputs, then using the Audigy to decode to 5.1 speakers would mean having to physically change the speaker connections from the 410 to the Audigy since the 410 does not have enough inputs.

For me, I don't usually need to decode from an external source (and if I did regularly , I would also want DTS decoding) - I usually use PowerDVD for onboard decoding in conjunction with the 1010LT directly.
