Logic 7 question

218 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Steve Dodds
Normally I'd ask this at SMR, but they are still down.

Does anyone know if Lexicon adds processing to the front left and right channels in 5.1 Logic 7. Switching between it and DD/THX 5.1 it certainly seems so.

And would I be correct in stating that the differences, especially on voices would be more noticeable if one ran the Lexicon in Phantom mode?

And finally, would it be fair to say that switching Bass Enhance on may reduce the overall level of bass while spreading it further to the sides.

Thanks in advance.

There shouldn't be much. 5.1 Logic 7 concentrates on the surrounds. What are you hearing?

Possible. There could well be mistakes in Phantom mode processing. It's probably one of the least exercised modes in the machine. Again, what are you hearing?

No, not really. The quality of it perhaps, but the level differences would have to do with your speakers, room and listening position. The absolute level should be similar.

Listening in Phantom, I hear a slightly (and I mean slightly but noticeable) more diffuse and reverby sound from the front two channels on dialogue.

Mmm, I dunno. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a time alignment problem there. As I recall there are three different DSP engines all churning away there and the code is horribly complex; lots of chance for an error. Ahh, go torture Lexicon http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hmmm. Upon further investigation, it seems the tonal changes are as a result of Bass Enhance. Is this something anyone else has noticed?

Steve
That actually makes a bit more sense. As in most things audio, the Bass Enhance is a compromise. The slight change in timbre you notice joins a small loss in "slam" in many systems, perhaps because the bass has been diffused.

What you get is gobs of spaciousness, much more like a good concert hall.

I'd boil it down to usefullness by musical genre. Good for classical and more "acoustic" recordings, not so good for rock, pop etc where a solid whack in the chest from the kick and bass is desired.

Thanks again Buzz, that explains what I am hearing. The confusion before was because I had BE on for Logic 7 and off for DD.

Ah the joys of fiddling!
