Logic 7 v Denon 7.1

421 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Raspewtin
I understand a few Lexicon owners have compared and/or changed their Lex's for the Denon 5800. How does the Denon 7.1 surround modes compare to the Lexicon's?

And if you've tried Neo:6 all the better.

Thanks

I read an interesting review somewhere (I can't remember) stating the superiority of Lexicon. The example disc they used was DragonHeart, where a Dragon circles overhead. The Lexicon was able to trace the dragon through all the speakers all the way around. The Denon, and Onkyo were not able to do this. DTS Neo is disappointing in my opinion. Anyone heard Prologic II yet?
The Denon 7.1 mode is a simple passive decoder: as I understand it from the manual, all the L speakers get the L channel, the R speakers the R channel, and the C speaker L+R.

I've heard PLII quite a lot, and it can handle circular pans very nicely.

Raspewtin, what about Neo:6 did you find disappointing? I don't disagree, by the way. While it does not have the gross flaws that Circle Surround exhibits occasionally, it does some weird things to the sound.
Hi

A friend has the Lexicon DC1 and the Logic 7 beats the THX EX easily but this is not the exact same topic.
Hi Roger, What are the Circle Surround flaws you have experienced?

I have used the original Rocktron Circle Surround decoder for three years in twao systems. It sounds and works great in both of my systems.

I replaced one of my CS decoders with the Lexicon preamp approx one year ago. The Lex Music Surround is quite similar to CS for music listening. Logic 7 puts some extra oomph into the front center channel, but does not provide any more rear channel stereo separation than does CS. The Lexicon does, however, allow for 7.1 (both side and back rear channels), and this is an upgrade from Circle Surround's merely 5.1 output.

Both are outstanding in my user's opinion.

Also, can you let us know of any planned A/V rec'rs or pre/procs which will have DPLII? Thanks. (You probably don't remember me, but we talked on the phone regularly some years ago, when DPL was first coming out, back in the Middle Ages.)

I don't think Roger can divulge before the manufacturer announces.

BTW, we have announced it and are working on it now. It will be a downloadable upgrade.

Buzz/Roger-

I know that Roger can't "announce" new equipment releases before the makers, but I thought he might give some indication of how imminent those annoucements might be. However, Onkyo has apparently, and I stress apparently, announced a DPL II upgrade for its 989 rec'r, and I think (and hope) Roger could confirm or deny that.

The apparent Onkyo information comes from an email quoted in another forum from Alexander Kroworz, Product Information, Onkyo Europe Electronics GmbH (Germany): "Finally, we can due to the information of our Japanese engineers confirm that the TX-DS989 will be upgradable with software for Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS ES 6.1 Discrete via the software connection on the backside of the TX-DS989."

Roger- You must have heard A/Bs between DD and DPL II on the same film. Any comment?

Roger,

I'm no audiophile, so I can't put my finger on it. But I never felt "immersed" with DTS Neo.
