My friends and I are thinking about setting up our computers as audio servers and would like to take a digital signal out and accross the room (or house) to our DACs or processors. Does anyone know if there is a length limit to running coax for this purpose? We are talking runs of perhaps 30-65 feet. Fiber may be an alternative though I assume the expense would be prohibitive- unless there is a cheap source for somehow DIYing a fiber connector.

thanks, - Noam

Well, for my computer audio, I do 48 ft over some cheap ($7.99??) Rat Shack cables.

The cable I bought was a 24-ft pair and I just separated the pair and joined them end-to-end with a RCA jack coupler.

Are you running a digital signal into the coax input with this setup ?

AS911- thanks for the link. If they are selling 50+ feet lengths I guess my DIY canare coax should work too.

The cable is the same but the termination is an rca type , not the typical cable tv connector.

You should be just fine. Just run a decent quality 75ohm coax (doesn't have to be expensive, though you could get the best from bluejeans etc for instance and even still it's not too expensive). I run HD video this far, which is far far more critical a task without too much difficulty. You'll be absolutely fine for SPDIF.
