I'm just curious to see if anyone else on here is as crazy as me as far as purchases go? The unfortunate thing about anything visual is that you need to actually see it in person to really get an understanding of what the product is all about. I have to say that projectors are one of the hardest consumer products to track down to actually audition. That is the main reason why I've gone through so many. I figured the best and easiest way to get access to all these fine projectors was to buy them and then, subsequently, sell them if I didn't like them or had seen better.

Here's what I've gone through (many more than once); in chronological order: (Updated 7/02/17)

I haven't taken any measurements yet, but it seems like that's the case. My current screen claims to be 1.0 gain but I have my suspicions that it's not. Probably more like .8 gain. I should have the high power screen sometime next week. I opted for Da-Lite's new high contrast grey to help a little bit with perceived contrast. I'm not too sure what the grey will do to colors though. I'm sure I can calibrate it out. I'll have to take out my trusty X-Rite Eye-One Display LT to do some measurements and calibration.

You sound a bit like me too, love to try out new kit and no harm buying things to try them out and then sell again if you don't like them! I've been through quite a few too (although in a more modest 3 years) in the quest for visual nirvana!

Some of these model numbers are UK and some may not have been released in US:

Optoma HD65

Sanyo Z5

Optoma HD81

Sanyo Z2000

LG CF181D

Optoma HD87

JVC HD750

JVC X3

BenQ W7000

Sony HW10

Next is possibly going to be the Sony HW50

Best 2D image out of that bunch IMO is the Optoma HD87 followed by the Sony HW10 - The Optoma has got 3 lens options and the lens alone cost $800 - sharpness was unreal - I've yet to own or see anything that beats it. I wish I still had it TBH, I sold it to go 3D

Best 3D is the BenQ W7000 IMO

So tell us about the ones you liked best and why....

The Marantz is a really nice projector, it just needs more lumens to compete against today's projectors. Image quality on a smaller screen with the Marantz is very good.

Now that's a projector where the trade offs with an HP2.4 are clearly justified especially with a screen say larger than 100" D 16/9. Just call me an HP2.4 fan boy.

Out of the group the Planar is my favorite. The InFocus IN83 is a fantastic projector as well. It does have a weird issue though. Just like the IN82, the IN83 has what seems to be a scaling issue. It affects the sharpness of the image a tad. Optically it has a great lens but because of what I can only described as what looks like scaling, even though it says it's receiving a 1080p source, it makes horizontal and vertical lines look very odd during movement, especially pans. Lowering the sharpness level seems to help but I don't want to set it too low. I do like the X3 because of the naturalness the LCOS panels give the image. Motion is its only real fault. One that I hope JVC fixes like Sony did a couple years ago. I'm hoping the Marantz lives up to the hype. I should be able to report once I get the high power screen.

We'll see once I get the screen. On/off contrast will be better on the Planar. I could tell that much by playing around with it last night. Optically it should be noticeably sharper. I'm a sharpness freak so that should be quite pleasing.

Always interested in hearing about your projector adventures....they allow me to live through you. Like you, I've been happily married to my Planar 8150 for sometime now. I would love to find a projector that projects a similar image with better black levels. Of course price is an issue to. I'm hoping I can live with my Planar longer, since I've paired it with the darbee video processor (see the video processor forum for those who haven't heard of the darbee).

Thanks again for sharing your findings

I don't think it is a gloat fest. I am thinking it is more like some kind of a trance induced deal. You know "don't look at the light!"

You have me beat and I thought I was over the top.

My last year after almost 2 years with my RS1:

Viewsonic Pro8100

LGCF181D

RS15

Sony HW30

RS45

BenQ W7000

Currently own the Viewsonic which I keep around to watch between purchases, the RS45, and W7000.

Selling the RS45 - on the pre-order list for the 4810.

I tell myself it is a good thing I can't afford vintage Corvettes.

I bought a darblet too. I tweaked some settings on the marantz this evening to try and get it a little brighter until the high power screen arrives. WOW! It puts out beautiful images. It looks to be just a tad behind the Planar in on/off contrast numbers with the iris clamped all the way down. The only downside I've noticed so far is that I have to force 24p output. I guess it's not set up in the EDID on this projector. It does 24p perfectly fine I just need to yell at it to make it work haha.

That's quite the list. I haven't owned a Sony and it's something I really want to try out. My local dealer has a VW95 set up and I got to see one in person for a few minutes. The room wasn't fully light controlled so I couldn't get a real gauge of how it looked. They did have Runco Q750i set up in their theater demo room that looked stunning though! The dealer told me he was getting rid of it so he could put a new model in the room. He asked if I wanted to know the ex-demo price and I told him I didn't want to know because I might be tempted. I'm guessing it was probably still 7 or 8k. Waaay out of my price league at the moment.

I'm just curious to see if anyone else on here is as crazy as me as far as purchases go? I have gone through a total of 15 projectors in as little as 14 months.

Here's what I've gone through; in chronilogical order:

Panasonic PT-AE900U 720p 3LCD

Sanyo PLV-1080HD 1080p 3LCD

Epson Home Cinema 6500UB 1080p 3 LCD

JVC DLA RS-10 1080p LCOS

JVC DLA-RS20 1080p LCOS

Planar PD8150 1080p .95" DC3 DLP

Sim2 Domino D80 1080p .95" DC3 DLP

Optoma HD20 1080p DC2 .65" DLP

Epson 8100 1080p 3LCD

Mitsubishi HC7800D 1080p .65" DC3 3D DLP

InFocus IN82 1080p .95" DC3 DLP

InFocus IN83 1080p .95" DC4 DLP

JVC DLA-X3 1080p 3D LCOS

BenQ W5000 1080p .95" DC2 DLP

Marantz VP-11S1 1080p .95" DC3 DLP

WOW!! What amazes me about your list is how many you have gone through in just 14 months!! There are some very good projectors there and I'm surprised you haven't found one that was the one for you yet. I thought it was bad to have had like 20+ projectors but over the last 12 years. I always loved DLP's and still do for HDTV/sports but for movies I am hooked on JVC's black levels. Other companies are closing the gap though so I am anxious for future projectors.

Did I say WOW that's a lot of projectors in a short amount of time??

Hope the Marantz works for you, they made fantastic projectors. I'm sorry that they quit making them.

Man, and my friends think I'm crazy, at least I know I'm in good company, even if I can't really compare:

Toshiba MT700

Infocus IN76

BenQ W5000

Planar8150

The Planar and the InFocus are the two stars, the Toshiba ate lamps and I got refunded after about the sixth lamp, the BenQ had to make a number of trips back and forth for a defective (noisy) manual iris, and eventually I think the travel dislodged/broke something (by that point out of warranty) as it either fails to start or shuts down randomly.

The InFocus I only got rid of to get 1080p, and the Planar's been in my HT for 3 years now and nothing compels me to change. I guess I maybe have better restraint than I would have thought given I haven't kept buying new projectors just to try them out (as much as I'd like to).

A thread for projector addicts. awesome.

I was fine until I came to this forum

Haha ! Home Theater Anonymous - " Hi, my name is _________and I'm a video projector addict " !

Seegs, you've owned more projectors in 14 months than I have in 14 years. However, there is no better way to really get to see what they can do, than spending time with them in your own home theater. And I can't really say that's excessive, considering I have over 1500 bottles of wine....

I've only owned -

Some InFocus LCD projector that was all my limited knowledge and money at the time could afford.........

NEC HT1000 DLP - and great machine at the time. 2002 or so.

Optoma H76

Optoma H79

Digital Projection dVision 1080p - this machine had ( and the current versions still do ) user changable lenses with bayonet mounts ( like a camera ! ) with one of the sharpest lens and sharpest pictures I have ever seen. And two frick'n bulbs - run one, the other or both at the same time! If these projectors only had dynamic irises that worked as well as the one in my Lumis or the new Sonys, they would be killer !!

Sim2 Lumis Host. Not much to say about this one other than wow, and I'm still happy after 3 1/2 years !!
