I want a sound system with at least 2.1 that has 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output.

(It can be more than 2.1 but in that case I would be using all speakers on the front).

I would be connecting my HTPC, my PS4 and my cable decoder, and so I need it to be able to pass through 3D signals, as my HTPC and the PS4 have 3D capabilities, which I believe means HDMI 1.4.

Ideally between $200 and $300.

So far, I have:
  • Samsung HW-F450
  • Sony HT-CT550W
  • Samsung HW-E450
  • Sony HT-CT660

Some recommendations to start with?

Thanks!

If you don't mind refurbished gear, this would be an excellent system for your needs...
That looks really nice.

How are Onkyo refurbs in general?

I ask because some brands sell flawless refurbs, and others are terrrible.

That receiver has a passive subwoofer. You should really get a system with a powered sub instead. It takes a load off the receiver from producing the lower frequencies.

Perhaps something like this although no HDMI on screen display.

Or if you want to put together a system separately...

Pioneer BS-21 speakers

If you want a 5.1 setup instead get the Denon receiver and these speakers.

What do you mean with that?

I have been toying with the idea of puting together a system... problem is that they are always much more expensive... I like about this solution you proposed that I can go from 2.1 to 5.1 easily, I'm correct?

A passive sub means it has no power. The receiver has to provide power like it does for the other 5 speakers. If the receiver has to drive 5 speakers plus a subwoofer that's more of a drain on the power supply

notice nothing but speaker terminals on the Onkyo sub? It needs a receiver to supply power to it.

You want a powered sub with its own built in amplification. Notice this sub has an amp and volume/gain control plus power cord on the back?

If the powered subwoofer handles all the lower frequencies then the A/V receiver only has to produce the higher frequencies to the other speakers which is easier for it to handle. You'll also get less distortion this way since the receiver wont tax itself as much.

Yep, you just add more speakers. And with the price of the Pioneers being $49/pr you could buy two pairs now and still be at the top of your budget.

Do you think that the Pioneer would sound better than the Samsung HW-F450 and Sony HTCT550W at about the same price, and better than the Samsung HW-E450 and Sony HT-CT660 for about 100 dollars less?

Yes! I would never recommend a soundbar unless you had absolutely no room for speakers.
I like it very much, and the price on newegg is excellent, but it worries me that there are a lot of broke-histories. I would try to research this model a little bit more. Thanks.

Any other comments or recommendations?

What are you referring to, the Pioneers or one of the soundbars? You lost me on the broke-histories.

The pioneer. If you read the reviews on newegg, there a lot of complains of bad quality.

Lets see:

84 reviews.

71 rated 5 stars

9 rated 4 stars

so 80 of 84 (96%) reviews are 4 - 5 stars.

1 3 star review

1 2 star review

2 1 star reviews

4% 3 stars or less,.

there's lots of other speakers out there and ultimately you are the one that needs to be satisfied. Definitely look around and listen to as many speakers as possible before buying any pair.

So I'm deciding between the Pioneer HTP-072 ($230), the Onkyo HT-S3500 ($250), or the Denon DHT-1312XP ($300)?

Which one would give me the best value?

Any other better value?

THANKS!
