Hi guys,

I am buying a JVC X95, and now i need a fixed screen with masks.

I hear many things such as:

1. You don't need to spend too much money on a screen, just buy a regular "mate" one without any gain

2. Others say it's very important and ask me lots of money for a screen

Well, i don't want to pay a fortune, but i want a superb picture, that was the reason i bought this projector. I need a 3 METER SCREEN. I saw brands such as screen research...

Any Help?

You're best bet is the Da-Lite JKP Affinity 1.1 screen material. I've gotten samples of both this and Stewart's SnoMatte 1.0 material and I think the JKP is better and it costs less than half of what the Stewart material does. Give AVScience a call as they can get you a great price on the screen and masking you're looking for.

I really depends on how much you are willing to spend for "high end", what size screen you are looking for, and how fancy a masking system you want. For a moderately priced, quality screen you might want to take a look at the Carada screens with their "classic cinema white", gain 1.0 matte white fabric (while a quality fabric, its a step below the JKP Affinity and Snomatte fabrics) in combination with their remote controlled, dual motor "Masquerate Masking System" ($4K+). HERE is the web link for the Carada masking system. Also HERE is a thread discussing the Stewart Vs. Carada masking systems.

What are the approximate prices on the various screens mentioned?

I dont think elune screens offer a masking system so they won't work for your needs. Even if they fix is be weary about a masking system from a company so new to market. Stick with the tried and true for masking systems. Da Lite, Stewart, and Carada are all fantastic choices with Stewart being the most expensive. Expect to spend $4000+ if you want a highend screen with a masking system.

remember no matter what, your projector is going to be 'due for replacement' in a few years, your screen can last through several projector upgrades if you buy a high quality one the first time.

i'm not sure i'd spend money for masking though. i'd buy a 2.35:1 format screen and if the bars on the side actually bothered me i'd use some curtains. but having a jvc x35, I can honestly say at this point in time I don't feel a need for masking in my room.

There is another, much cheaper masking alternative. SeymourAV offers a manual masking system that uses magnets. Check out http://www.seymourav.com/masking.asp . I haven't seen many posts about this on AVS, but it seems to me to be a far more cost effective way to go: $350 vs. $4000 seems like a no-brainier to me.....

Depends on what you want, solutions like the Seymour one are manual, you have to get up and add/remove the panels, the more expensive ones (Carada, Stewart, etc) are motorized.

if I were going to use manual masking, i'd buy the velvet, some 1/8" board, a little 3M spray glue, the magnets, and make my own. the price of the velvet would literally be 80% of the cost.

How does Elunevision compare with Carada?

I have an elunevision reference 1.0 gain screen and it's wonderful. They even did a custom one with a smaller boarder for me. I was a repeat customer at eastporters and got it for around $890, regular price is $1500.
