im currently running a yamaha rx-v3800 receiver, with energy rc-70, rc-lcr, and rc 10 for the speakers and PB12-NSD sub. im looking to purchase emotiva xpa-5. does anyone have a similar set up, or any input on this setup?
Well, I can comment on having owned the RX-V2700. Which has a similar amp section.
I added a two channel Mackie amp. You know how people say they added an external amp, and were blown away? Well, 200x2 watts of Mackie power did not blow me away
I felt it could get a bit louder on musical passages.
Have you considered the XPA-3? That's the route I would go if I decided I needed more power (which I don't.) It's cheaper, probably lighter, and will cover the more important front channels, while letting the amps in the 3800 cover the surrounds, and if needed, rear surrounds.
The XPA-5 might be nice though, if you need to amp a zone.
