I've been out of the homeaudio practice for awhile, so I need some help. I live in an apartment so I only have room for bookshelf speakers. I have a pricetag around $1200 that can be used also if I need to be on the lookout for something. I want a speaker that disappears and has that airy feel to it that good speakers bring. Sealed or vented is fine and my room is small to medium. Any suggestions. Oh I should mention that I do a lot of critical listening. Oh I should mention I care about looks also. PHew that's a tall order

I've been looking at those and I like the way they look and all the reviews are steller. But do they do well with jazz and live music?

To tell you how out of it I am I went over to AV123 to check out the prices on the References and they don't even sell them any more. I went to ask why not and the forum was closed. I did some research on why and MOTHER OF GOD.

I don't know Knucklehead those look like they were built to kick A$$ and take names. I'm looking for a bookshelf for critical listening in a smaller space.

Those aren't as large as you might think. They are only 9.5" deep x 8.5" wide x 26" high - and are a sealed design. Yes they can kick ass all right. I have the 'big brother' to those - the ERTs . They sound very similar - but the 6.3 is smaller. Of course the ERTs have much better bass with the 8" dual woofers.

I am aware of audiogon but without knowing the characteristics of any of the speakers sold what am I going to buy. There are some B&W 800 bookshelf's that look nice but do they meet the criteria I am looking for I have never personally heard them. That's what I am looking for people who have listened to these speakers and know some that are good for critical listening with jazz and classical.

Take a read on the Emotiva Lounge - speaker reviews and see what others have to say about the different Emotiva speakers. The 6.3 I recommended to you seems to be a real winner. Here is another - professional review - of one of the speaker packages by Emotiva.

I've posted on the Lounge myself - a review of the 8.3 - the ERDs - and the ERMs - which I sent back because I didn't want a sub in my bedroom.

You can try out a pair of the ERM-1s for cheap - they are being closed out and are going for $149 each. I was surprised at how well they sound - but there is little in the bass department - you'd need to add a small sub for them to sound their best. They would be ideal in a small room with a sub - and they are designed for use with one.

I've been in this hobby for over 40 years and have never heard a speaker that delivers so much for so little. I paid $1600 for my 8.3s and have yet to hear another speaker that has the mid range that these do for under $3500pr. I've paid more than that and thought I'd gotten more - until I bought the 8.3s. With the sealed design the bass is tight and exact - not sloppy like many ported speakers - boomy and with no real clarity. I used to play bass guitar - I know what they sound like - and thats what I get on my 8.3s.

While I've never heard the 6.3 I have heard other speakers from Emotiva - and own the 8.3s and ERDs that are in the review I linked to above. The Emotiva speakers compare very well to speakers at twice or more than the price of some other speaker brands.

They have a 30 day no questions asked policy should you decide you don't care for them. You simply pay shipping to return them and they fully refund your money. Cheap insurance should you not like them. They also have a 5 year fully transferable warranty if you decided to sell them down the road - the next person covered just as if they were the original owner. And the next etc etc. Calling them will get you a real person on the phone - surprise! And they are very easy to deal with.

Take a read or two on the Emotiva Lounge in the speaker reviews. Most of the people are knowledgeable about speakers and give honest reviews. When I informed the lounge I was sending the ERMs back I didn't get flamed that some forums are known for. They aren't fanboys - mostly not - just people that have a taste for good music and home theater and know how to find it.
