I finally got the okay to get all new front speakers. I was originally going to get a new center, but since I could never voice match my L/R it seemed pointless. Now armed with permission to replace the front 3, I am trying to figure out what I should look at.

I don't have a sub right now and don't really want to add one till we get a house so they need to have some bass but its not something super important to me. The room is about 12 x 14ish.

I would like to spend as little as possible but I also realize you get what you pay for. I have been mostly looking at stuff from the 400 to 600 range. I have been looking at a Jamo set from wwstereo that seemed good, though the LR towers seemed almost too big but I could make them fit.

Oh and they will be powered from my Onkyo TX-DS696.

EDIT:

Just wanted to add I like the idea of bookshelves but right now I don't have a good place to sit them and the lady hates speaker stands. Would bookshelves that are wall mounted and maybe an inch or two behind the TV be a big no no? When I get out of the apartment will be a non issue because the TV is getting wall mounted.

I would suggest that if the wife doesn't like the bookshelves on speaker stands, and if you won't be getting a sub, you should definitely go with some nice Floorstands to get some degree of bass out of them. I have Infinity P362 floorstands, PC350 center, and no sub. It produces enough bass to satisfy me for now, until I move into a house or better apartment. A pair of bookshelves alone just wouldn't do it for me.

I like the Infinity line, but was told no silver. Though I may try showing her those specific ones and see what she says.

The TSC ones look good I had forgot about them, My only concern is right now the woofer on the left would be firing straight into a wall and there is not much I can do about that right now.

Swap the speakers so the woofers fire inside.

I really like those but was worried about the bass being a little too lacking.

Go to the 500's from Energy

Most music doesn't go much lower than 40hz. The 500s do 35hz which isn't bad for $400 for a pair. I don't know how accurate the bass will be. Energy is a good bang for buck company for people with tight budgets in this hobby. Don't look to much into specs. Listening is the only way to judge a speaker.

If you want lower than 35hz to 40hz buy a subwoofer. True full range (20hz-20,000hz) speakers are a ton of money.

It is the same series but the C-C100 Center would be the correct center. It would be more of a match sonically. Quick look on the internets and about $150. That would be $550 for the 500s with the 100 center. Not bad at all.

I actually showed Infinities to her and I was more or less grunted at, I am taking that as an okay. I think the Energy setup is my primary at this point, and the Infinities are a good backup option at about the same budget. It would be nice to spend a little less but that doesn't seem like a good option.
