Hey Everyone,

Just looking for some thoughts. I am looking to get a bit more power and warmth out of my speakers. I am running Klipsch RF 82's for front rc 62 and f1's. I am running them with a Yamaha 6130(got a deal on it) Now I am willing to upgrade my amp but do now want to spend a fortune. It had also crossed my mind to go to a 7.2 setup but not a must.

My current amp is putting out 100wpc and although I am happy with it I just don't feel like I am using my setup to its max potential. Any reccomendations on what to do to get a little more love out of my setup without replacing the amp, would an equilizer be reecommended? and if you feel amp replacement is a must... what would you recommend?

Thanks.

If you are in a live, untreated room, that should be your first focus. If your current setup plays loud enough for you, maybe an additional power amplifier is not an issue. An equalizer isn't a bad idea, although "purists" think they taint the sound. A decent one can transparently correct frequency response anomalies at the listening position.

Now what would you suggest for treating the room for sound?... I do have to paint here shortly.. anything I can do with that? I can definately handle more power.. as i do love it loud, but at 100wpc what out there is going to really put that over the top? even at +2 or +4 I find the fronts start to distort when listening to music, but it seems to be due to lack of power than anything. I think atleast. The RF 82's are rated to handle all that amp has to throw at it, am I wrong in thinking its the amp giving out at these high volumes? I do turn it up stupidly loud btw... -11 is where I am comfortable when watching movies. Now I am also using a PS3 to listen to music that is saved on the HD.... maybe this is having an affect on the sound as well?

You have 100w/ch and your speakers are 98dB efficient.

If you cannot drive those to LOUD levels without distortion, you have bigger issues.

You probably don't understand the logarithmic nature of sound. You will have to DOUBLE your amplifier power to make the smallest noticeable difference to your loudness and you will need TEN TIMES as much power to make it sound doubly loud. This is truly the path of diminishing returns!!

The speakers you have are as efficient as any others you will find.

Perhaps it is your expectations that are out of whack. You might get a friend with more "audiophile" experience to listen to your system and see what they say.

If you start with wall-to-wall carpeting, some upholstered furniture, maybe some drapes, you are halfway there. Killing first reflections with acoustical panels adjacent to your left and right speakers (if there are walls there) is important. You might go to an acoustics thread in this forum for more help. I did some extensive custom panels from Dennis Erskine, but I recently augmented them with some very nice and reasonably priced panels and bass traps from GIK Acoustics.

If you can clap your hands and it sounds like you're in a parking garage, your room has issues. You don't want slap echo, flutter echo, or reverberation. I'd rather listen to cheap speakers in a great-sounding room than great speakers in a bad-sounding room.
