Hi,

I am looking for speakers like these Sony ones.

http://www.sonystyle.com/intershopro...50/DAVC990.jpg

I like the styling, but I am guessing that these particular speakers are not that great, or are they? They also don't seem to sell the speakers separately and I will be using a HTPC as my new DVD player so I don't need their DVD.

Could you guys recommend to me some not so expensive ($750 to $1,500) good quality alternatives that are small like these. They can be a little bigger, but not the normal sized ones. Also, I am not interested in bookshelf speakers.

Thanks for the advice!

Hmm... Bang and Olufsen makes speakers that look like that, but they're pretty expensive. Other companies do too, but when you're looking, they somtimes refer to them as 'plasma speakers' due to the styling, I think they're mostly geared to match plasma display hardware.

My two cents (free after inflation) is to get the sony package that initially struck you and just ebay the dvd player. (ebay's a verb now, isn't it?) :)

Wow, those are nice! Pretty much what I am looking for. Am I wrong or does that page say that systems start at $10,000, is that US dollars? If so, I doubt that the street price is anywhere near what I was prepared to pay. That's too bad too, they look like great quality too.

http://soundcity.com/infinity/ hope this helps, just to give you an idea of prices.

just my 2 cents...

that sony cots 999, is that roughly your budget? i'd suggest an adire audio rava [400] and start with an axiom 3.1 system. front bookshelves and a centre [400 plus 220 for the centre]

400 bucks for any slightly used reciever from audiogon. [outlaw, denon etc]

with this setup you're almost "there".

2 surrounds can be added during christmas [always have an upgrade path :)]

warm regards,

p.s aperion would cost you 540 bucks [excluding the sub] thats another good sounding and classy looking option

Those VM1's look great. How much do they cost? I can't seem to find a price anywhere online.

yeah.. i was gonna say about the Mission sub sat system.. but some guy already beat me to it.

I have that Sony Dream System DAV 990. It's perfect for my room. I use it for gaming, mainly... And i like it.. for what it does. the cones are made of paper, i believe. the sub kinda sucks.

I saw three VM-1s on audiogon just last week. I think the guy wanted like $350 for all three including shipping. I only needed one so I didn't buy but those are a nice option.

if you have B&W dealer in your area go visit them and audition them before buying...

This North Carolina firm, Role Audio, makes some great sounding thin speakers.

I compared them side by side with full width speakers, like Divas, and .. these kept "in the same league", despite the lack of width.

IMHO all speakers THAT THIN will be a compromise, but this choice minimizes the compromise.
