I am looking for a 58" TV that has:

- Min 15,000:1 contrast ratio

- True 1080p/24

- At least 2 HDMI 1.3 ports

- Around $4,000 to $4,600

I am redoing my whole Home Theater upgrading from a 42" Samsung plasma & sony receiver.

For a receiver I'm thinking about the Denon AVR-3808CI.

I think the Pioneer PDP-6010FD fits the bill (other than being 60" rather than 58") ... Check with some of the forum sponsors or places like Amazon; they'll likely have the 6010 somewhere near the top end of that price range.

The OP asked for "true 1080p/24".

Pioneer is the ONLY one that will accept AND display 1080p/24 without converting it to 1080p/60.

that'd be the 6010fd.

I'd consider the panny 58pz750 for 1K less as well.

Not only does the Panny not display 24fps, it doesn't even accept a 24fps signal. I know the 700u doesn't (I have one) and I'm pretty sure the 750 is the same in that regard. The 800/850s might be able to do 24 fps.

If you want to get technical, Sony does this too, on many models.

As for the OP, if you're willing to wait until Spring, Panasonic will have their new PZ85/PZ800 models out and they apparently do 24p natively as well. This should prove to be a great alternative to Pioneer.

Quite right - my bad. I believe the new ones - the 800/850s will - but the 58" won't be out until the fall.

I'm not buying this tomorrow - I have two months to mull over it.

If they have a 58" - 60" LCD that is just as high quality then that would work too.

gt500,

Everyone is correct the 6010FD would be the only plasma available that can display 1080/24. However, with new displays from Panasonic and Samsung they should have this capability. You will have plenty of choices at that time in April.

I'd suggest you go check it out at a store if you can. (I'm not talking about that 120hz smoothing thing that some do, but the 24fps that current Pioneer's do.) Some people absolutely love it, others not so much. You might find it doesn't matter to you, in which case you could get a new set sooner rather than later.

The 700U does accept a 24p signal, just won't display it. I have confirmed this at home.

24p makes a difference IMO on my 6010- I have the 700u to compare to and it's certainly a little smoother with film from my BD30- nothing huge mind you. You must have a 24p source (certain, not all BD, HD-DVD players) to notice this.

Huh? If it won't display it how do you know it will accept it?

I've tried forcing 24fps to my 700u with my PS3 and it does display a cropped window (each of the 4 sides is cut off a quite a bit) that takes up about 1/4 of the screen, but I don't consider that displaying 24fps.

How did you confirm this and what was the equipment you used?

6010FD is the only one in the OP's desired size, true, but the 50" and 65" Panasonic PF10UK will also accept a 1080p/24 signal and display it at 48hz or 96Hz.

Check your manual- it does this. I send 24p siganl from my A20 every time I watch a HD-DVD movie.

No, it doesn't. The A20 can't force 24fps, it only sends 24fps if the HDMI handshake with the TV says it accepts 24fps. Sorry but you're still watching at 60hz.

I was reading the Samsung FAQ about the 5084 and..

Can the 1080p sets display 24fps? Yes. It is unknown how the sets interpret 24fps but the image is reportedly very smooth with no apparent issues. I will check tonight with the info button to see if it displays. So I am looking for 24hz?

1K extra is well worth it. If I had this money to spend, I would put in 2K due to the superiority of the 6010.
