looking to get into multi-channel audio

899 Views 7 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Liquid
I'm looking to enter the multi-channel audio realm, but don't want to spend too much with the next generation HD/Blu-ray (maybe) on the horizon. The players I've been looking into are the...

Pioneer DV-588A

Toshiba SD6980

Samsung DVD-HD950

DENON 1920

Samsung 841

Yamaha DVD-C750

I'll be using the player for video as well as audio, so both PQ and SQ are important to me. Does anyone have any recommendations between these models (or another model not listed above)???

Thanks!

I'm happy with the Pioneer 588A. You can find a review of it here at Secrets.
My vote would be for the 588 if need only component out for video & the 1920 if have HDMI inputs on TV.
I just got the Denon 1920 and I was pretty impressed with the audio quality for a player at this pricepoint.
I've not had a really good experience with the Samsung DVD950. I've had two units that had some video issues. I just disconnected it last nite and put the old Samsung DVD841.

I also would not go with the Samsung due to it not having Speaker Level/Distance adjustsments. If you use a DVD Player that does not have those adjustments, you should make sure that your receiver has the capabilty to apply it's own Speaker Level/Distance and Bass Management to the incoming analog signal. Recievers with that capabilty are not very common. Most do not apply any signal processing to the analog inputs.

I'm looking to upgrade to either the Marantz DV6600 or the Denon 1920. They have the Speaker Level/Distance adjustments. The feedback I get is that the Marantz has higher quality audio.

I have the 841 also. as far as I know this unit will not decode dsd/mlp, but simply "play"them back. Besides it's way too cheap to have the decoders in it? No expert.

I'd say either go REALLY cheap, or say screw it, be an early adopter, and get a HiDef player that supports the audio you want :)
I just listened to Dark side of the moon, and Steely Dan's Gaucho yesterday on my new 1920 for the first time. Wow, the sound is fantastic for what I paid.
