I bought a cheap subwoofer(KLH) from costco to tied me over until the new SVS sub becomes available. The problem is I can not seem to get the sub to work when listening to audio CD. I have Denon 3803 and Philip 963SA and this is how I have everything connected: Coaxial Digital OUT from Philip 963SA to Den 3803 Coax Digital IN. Multichannel Audio Out (L,F, C, Sub, SR) from Philip to EXT IN on the Denon. The KLH sub is connected to Denon's Pre Out Sub using a single rca cable. The sub works fine when listening to SACD and watching DVD movies by selecting the EXT IN on the Denon. However when I select CD input on the Denon I can hear the music but there is no sound from the sub. I went into the setup menu on the Denon and selected Coax as an input for CD so I don't know what else I am overlooking. Just to experiment I used analog cables and connects the audio out from the Philip to the Denon CD IN then the sub works fine. What am I doing wrong?

I am not familiar with the Denon 3803 menu, but it sounds like the sub is disabled for the sound mode you have selected for your CD listening. Check to make sure the subwoofer output is turned on. There is no direct channel for the sub on audio CDs and the receiver has to take the signal received from the CD and convert or make a channel to send to the subwoofer. (trying to use lamens terms) Hope that helps.

Thanks klipsch. Maybe this is a silly question but the Coax digital output from the dvd player can carry the sub signal to the receiver correct? Like I said if I use analog cables connection from the DVD player to the receiver then the sub works...

Just so I have this straight...you are using a Coax digital output from your dvd player to play regular CDs (not SACD, DVD, etc.)?

If that is correct then...

The digital output carries the 2 channel signal from the CD (left and right) to the receiver. The receiver then has the option of...

a) sending the signal to the left and right speakers only

b) sending the signal to the left and right and taking a part of the signal below say 80 hz and sending that to the subwoofer

c) sending everything above (say) 80 hz to the left and right and sending everything below 80 hz to the subwoofer

d) 7 channel options, diiferent effects, etc

The list goes on and on. So, basically you will need to determine which option your receiver is currently configured for and change it to the one you want. I tried to be simplistic in explanation and I hope I didn't make any mistakes or make it confusing.

I just wanted to post a follow up in case someone else run into a similar problem. I was able to make to the sub works by turning off the 'upsampling' feature on the Philip 963SA. I don't know why but it works...
