I've been testing out projectors. So far I've tested out three or four different brands with lots off of different specs. I've been using Lord of the Rings as one of my test movies. I've been noticing that this particular movie is very hard to reproduce. The colors are all over the place, sometimes they look fine and then in other scenes everything seems off. I have also watched the same movie on my Toshiba theater wide TV and have notice some of the same problems when watching it on the TV just not as bad. I also used Attack of the Clones for testing and that movie seems to look fine. Also Minority report with a little adjustment was also fine. Any input would be appreciated.

Most of the cool colors in LOTR are in the lower ire segments, where stock projectors (and rptvs) are notorious for having poor stock settings. To fix it and get a comprable comparison going requires either an isf certified person to run tests, the colorfacts program and equipment, or the smart III setup.

I use smart III.

It is a time consuming process and as such is not something any manufacturer does before shipping. They get the units "close" and shove them out the door. If you want to do a minimum level of adjusting, bring the avia dvd with you when you go to the stores and perform a quick contrast/brightness adjustment. That wont change the colors, but it will at least get you more details and allow the brights and darks to not be crushed.

Colors require much more work...

I always thought that in LOTR the director intentionally and subtly altered color temperature and saturation from scene to scene, as an "effect." Isn't that what you are seeing?

Cheers! :)

This is quite true - LOTR:FOTR has a lot of green and some scenes have almost nothing but blue. The wizards battle is an example of this.

For what its worth, my hs10 when tweaked (but not calibrated via avia or smart) provides a beautiful showing of this DVD.

One other thing, check your component cables tomake sure they aren't loose. You can get some off colors just from that.
