anyone know of plans to add ESPN2HD? it's not listed on Charter's website so i'm assuming most/all of you don't have it (i'm probably moving to a Charter area from a TW area, and if there's no ESPN2HD i'll probably just switch to D*), also can anyone comment on what digital/HD channels are carried in the clear? FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, CW, TNTHD, etc...?

Anybody notice that as of last night, Charter's previously in-the-clear HD channels are now encrypted? I was watching the ABC7 news in HD with my Samsung DTB-H260F and the picture froze, and then as I was flipping through my 7 other HD channels, they started dropping off, and within like 2 minutes, there were none left, except for fox sports HD, and the ocassional VOD stream in progress on a couple random channels.

I live in Hesperia, CA, by the way, it's in the High desert, by Victorville, and Apple Valley. I was over at dslreports and another member from Apple Valley reported the same thing.

Is this widespread, or just in my small "high desert" area?

Final Charter AVS forum post (for now) ...

Just left Charter in Long Beach and switched to Verizon Fios - mostly to add Fox Sports HD and ESPN2 HD, but there are others that Charter didn't have as well. I'm not crazy about Verizon's interactive guide set up and DVR recording option (complicated to set "record series" options), but there's a version 2.0 coming that looks to be much better. Am payihg $99 for phone + tv + internet ... PLUS additional dollars for the upgraded boxes and HBO, etc. Still, a little less than Charter for more selection.

Of course right when I cancelled was when they said they could have price-matched the Verizon deal, but since I didn't go into much detail with the Charter rep, I don't know whether it truly would have been a price match. (I knew she was losing her shot at a bonus, since I wasn't switching back, so we kept the convo short.) I took the cable boxes back to Charter this past weekend; no issues.

Any word on Charter Burbank/Glendale getting better Moxi boxes than the piece of crap they had before? Someone in Ventura got a new version of the Moxi that supposedly has more storage and performs better than the old one. I forget what service he was on. If Charter finally gets an improved version over the piece of crap they offered before (yeah, I tried it), then I might give it another shot.

Beginning July 9th Charter will be rolling out a new version of Moxi software that provides a dramatic boost to performance and supports expanded storage through an external hard drive (along with a few dozen other improvements). The first wave of this software rollout hit Charter's central region earlier this month. Response has been very positive. Here are two examples:

Unbelievable how fast the navigation is. I knew it was going to be improved, but this is not what I was expecting (basically instantaneous response bringing up menus, fast rolling, etc).-- AtogMuncher

It's a whole new experience with 500+ GB of recording at your disposal. Snagged the 500 GB WD MyBook Essential for ~$100 from Dell and installed it last week w/o any problems. Marked several movies to record for the kids and a couple for me and they all recorded w/o a hitch. Then Sunday I realized that I still had gobs of room so that I could actually record the whole 6 hours of U.S. Open HD coverage... Oh, and my storage was still only at ~35% full. -- JohnnyHK

The new software delivers these improvements to the current hardware.

Wow! Sounds nice! Might have to try it again middle to late July. External storage will be a boon.

It's been two months, I guess time for a bump (ha!) I'm thinking once again about picking up a STB to get just the locals in HD, but I have yet to receive word on whether it was a fluke that my unencrypted QAM channels actually went bye-bye, or if charter started encrypting all of their QAM channels, including the locals?

I am in Long Beach, CA and as of yesterday my QAM tuner in a Panasonic TV did not pickup any unencrypted digital channels. The channels have been steadily dropping over the last few months with Charter. As of a few days ago I could only pickup Fox-HD, PBS-HD, UHD, MHD and the VOD channels. Now, zip. Very annoying.

I just started Charter cable service and got a moxi hd dvr installed. NOt sure what the model is. It says on the bottom of the box that it's a model mp12f revision E (Seems like someone made that model number out of thin air). It looks exactly like a BMC 9012.

Software version is 4.1.94SR

Just wondering if anyone knows if this unit with Charter accepts an external hard drive for storage, and is the dvi output able to be used?

Got a response that might help someone else out as well.

All the Moxi boxes (so far) look pretty much the same. The model name mp12f decodes as follows:

m (for Moxi)

p (for PowerKEY, the brand name for Scientific-Atlanta conditional access)

1 (for one-room)

2 (for two tuners)

f (for FireWire, AKA IEEE 1394)

the MP designation means it's for use in areas served by Scientific-Atlanta headends.

It corresponds to the Moto model BMC9012. (The 9022 is a two-room model).

DVI out and external drive should both be enabled. (To be sure about external drive, check settings on the menu and see if there's a card for external drive in the stack).

  • KCBS-HD 1080i
  • KNBC-HD 1080i
  • KTLA-HD CW 1080i
  • KABC-HD 1080i
  • KTTV-HD FOX 720p
  • KCET-HD PBS 1080i

KCAL 9 and KCOP 13 are still not in HD. So no Lakers games in HD.

i was actually getting KCAL 9 in HD for like a week. now it suddenly disappeared. it's strange that is was there and now is gone.

it was channel 101.9 if you're plugging it into your cable QAM tuner built into your HDTV display.

101.9 on HDHomerun shows it as QAM encrypted.

that would explain why i was able to see it for like a week or two. charter must of accidently clearqam it for testing purposes or something. so the channel is there but it's encrypted... that sucks! aren't they supposed to clearqam that channel anyways? it's a public digital station no? can we call and complain?

I'm guessing that 101.9 is not tied to KCAL 9 - it was just used for testing purposes. IIRC, by law/regulation, if the cable company carries the broadcast channels, then it has to be in clear QAM.

But in general, yeah, calling up Charter and asking for KCAL 9 and KCOP 13 in HD wouldn't hurt.

I mean they always advertise Lakers in HD on Timer Warner blah..blah so maybe when close to basketball season KCAL 9 HD will appear.
