The KCET HD channel exhibits annoying motion artifacts. While the HD pic quality is acceptable for slow pans and zooms (commonplace in the PBS demo material), the abrupt scene changes (cuts?) have a discernable delay before the picture quality "snaps" in. These artifacts are distinct and annoying.

Is KCET compressing their HD signal bandwidth to accomodate their SD DTV channel?

If Yes...

Hey KCET - It's a poor compromise. Early adopters don't care about an SD-DT channel that offers just slightly better quality than the analog broadcast, especially if having the SD DT channel hurts HD channel picture quality!!

At the same time, I appreciate having the KCET demo loop that showcases HD (although more turnover of program material would be nice)

Here's a copy of an email I sent to KCET regarding this issue along with thier reply. Sorry for the poor formatting.

There is less bandwidth for HD when multicasting with the additional SD

signal. Programming is still in an experimental stage and I expect

programmers, both national and local, will be interested in the

capabilities of the system over the next couple of years and trying

different formats.

Yes, but not on purpose. We've been experiencing problems with the RF

power modules in the transmitter which cause us to drop in power when one

or more goes out. We have sent several back to the factory for rebuild,

however, we are still experiencing outages, which decreases the signal

level to you.

Ignore any variations in power levels, if you notice some days are better

than others it's because we get everything repaired and back to normal,

and then another module dies. It's been an ongoing battle.
