I am looking for suggestions for loud dynamic speakers that retain their accuracy, detail, and soundstaging. I am looking to spend $5000 or less for a pair of speakers. I had Anthony Gallo 3.1's and liked the way they sounded, except they aren't loud or dynamic enough for my fairly large room. I also have Salk soungtowers. They also sound good, and are a little louder and more dynamic, but I am looking for something that will kick me in my chest and get louder than I want. I want hurting me ears to be a bigger concern than damaging my speakers(I blew a mid on the gallo's in the past trying to push them too hard). I don't always listen loud, but I like to have the capability. I listen to all different types of music, and will also be using them for HT. I have a an Icepower amp 5x200 rms, and two MFW-15 subs, but I don't like using the subs for music.

The names I've been seeing on this forum lately in response to a question like this include JBL, Danley, JTR, GedLee, and Seaton, among others.

Speakers that use pro drivers. If you search within the speaker section of this site, you'll find threads mentioning all of the above.

Definitely contact Mark Seaton about his products or research JTR Triple12s.

You could also contact John Janowitz @ Acoustic Elegance, His company sells the Lambda pro audio drivers and they will kick you in the chest!! He is currently working on custom high spl/high distortion speakers.

The only other suggestion would be to research Line Arrays, HIGH spl can be gain through having many, many drivers in an array.

This search has been going on for some time now hasn't it?

Dave,I think you should take your music over to Jim's shop and play it thru his HT 3's.I recently listened to them at his shop with the newly revised woofers and let me tell you they kick you in the chest and make the hair on your arms stand up. At the very least you should call Jim and talk to him. He is a very standup guy who wants to make all his customers happy.Sam

I don't think Dave is too far from Salk.

I am thinking 200W isn't enough power for a large room, you are only capable of a few db over the sensitivity ratings of what ever speaker you chose, to stay clean. I am thinking you are looking for 500W/ch or more to really drive a set of speakers to the levels you are suggesting, something along the lines of a Crown commercial amps etc.

Klipsch Jubilee; a rare bird to audition, but sounds like what you want. I _think_ they are in your price range, but I may be wrong. Around 108 dB sensitivity, 2-way with active crossover...

Thank you to those who already mentioned me above.

While there are some speakers which will better deliver what you are after, having the pair of MFW-15s off for music makes this an unnecessarily difficult task. I would recommend something like an SMS-1 or one of the many other EQ & measurement options to get things really dialed in with your pair of MFW-15s. This way you free the speakers from the requirement of deep bass extension which will always limit the sensitivity of the speaker or make it very large (and usually expensive).

Again, you can do it without the subs, but it limits options significantly.

I am located about 20 minutes from Jim's shop. I did check out the HT3's, but at the time he only had a 50 watt amp hooked up to them which I am sure didn't do them any justice.

Thanks for your advice Mark. I am using an SMS-1. I think I may have the MFW's in a bad location in my room (its the only place they can be). I can't get them to hit hard and tight enough for music. They work great for movies and I am actually using 3 right now. They play the deeper bass great, but dont give me that punch in the chest im looking for in the upper bass region for music. There is a good chance that I just don't have the SMS-1 set up right, or it could be lack of room treatments. I just noticed an improvement in the upper bass going from the gallo's to the salks, so I figured I can do even better, and get louder. Where do I find info on your speakers Mark?

Dave, I'd really like to see a picture of your room, it must be huge!

My room is 30'x30'. There is a wall running down the middle, separating the kitchen from the living room. It has two open doorways, and a huge window. Basically most of the middle wall is open. What can I say, sometimes I like LOUD music...

There is a pair of Jubilees in Bay City, if that happens to be near you. (I think I saw you are in Michigan?)

I know the owner and am pretty comfortable saying that he'd entertain an audition should you be interested.

Just for the record, if you DID look into this, he's using the smaller horn on top of his and not the same (huge) horn others are using.

I've got a pair in Knoxville, TN if someone would like to audition the larger horn.

They are about $7,000, 2-way and most are biamping. They WILL pummel you from across the house if you want them to. They will also serve as excellent "normal listening" speakers.

I've got a pair of Crown K2's wired to mine. Sometimes I don't need a pair of K2's and sometimes I do!
