I have been having trouble with my ps3 for some time, and after trying different cooling methods, I still dont have an answer.

After reading on the forum, it seems some of us just have loud ps3's. I have a 40gb, and tonight i drew the line. I kept the door open on my ps3, and cabinet, and even took it out, and it was still loud, overpowering and it was not even hot. Anytime i start a blue ray or play a game, it gets really loud.

I seen some people had this issue and got a refurb unit from sony.

Im wondering firstly how long is the ps3 warranty, and also since I moved I currently dont have my receipt anymore, am i out of luck?

Also does anyone have any tips on keeping the ps3 cool, it seems mine is just naturally loud, but i also wouldnt mind trying some other cooling methods that have worked for others.

Any advice or info on the warranty and cooling would be much appreciated.

I had this problem with my 40G unit early on and I still believe it to be a software issue. Mine was the same way in that it would not get hot at all but the fan would almost immediately kick in to jet engine mode even when idling in the XMB. I reset/formatted my PS3 and havent had an issue since. Of course, yours could be full of dust & the air flow could be massively blocked, but I think it's worth a try.

You could also try the "self cleaning" test...it basically kciks your fan on at high speed to blast out crap in the vents. It does work but the usefullness of it is debatable.

Vaccum it, I never heard of loud 40 gigs PS3, my backup one doesn't make a sound at all next to my 60 gig which after about 1 hours kicks into Level 2 fan and if played on hot conditions goes to Level 3( but I put the AC on now in the summer so it never goes there anymore, sticks on Level 2).

I've gone through 4 units (started out with 60g units) and I still have that problem. Sony did replace my original 60g with a refurb that was just as noisy. I sold it and got a 40g which I took back and got another one that seemed to be better for a while and then it got way worse (summer, dust?) - I use a Radio Shack sound meter to compare. I tried 1-2 external fans, I opened it up and reaplied thermal compound on the processors but in the end the only thing that worked for me was moving it to a spare bedroom and running cables back to the Media Room. I have to go to the next room to put a disc in but no big deal.

I know this isn't helpful but.. just crank up the reciever a little and you won't even notice
I can't believe that Sony will take back a perfectly good unit on warranty because it is "loud", seems like a waste of money, just my 2 cents.

You very obviously speak as someone who has not experienced the problem.

Do you use A/C in your home? If I turn mine off and the temp inside is over 77 my PS3 will go to mach 3. It's not a defect, it's what's required to cool the thing. Usually my thermostat is set to 75 and I have no problems.

This may or may not be true, can you come and listen to my PS3 and 360 and tell me if they are abnormally loud because I honestly couldn't tell you? I'm just saying that what might be loud to someone might actually be completely normal (the way the manufacturer intended it to be) to someone else and if it works it works and I think the manufacturer is wasting money taking back a "loud" unit and sending out possibly another "loud" unit. Not trying to argue just saying if it works it works and some people seem way to sensitive to a slight difference in how loud they are. Like I said just my opinion.

I know it was your opinion...my experience was that the PS3 would RANDOMLY kick in to high speed mode, sometime IMMEDIATELY upon turning it on in a cool & dry room, and it was as loud as a vacuum cleaner. No lie. Since I did what I posted in my old thread above I have not experienced that situation even once in over a year. Now, on really hot days with the air conditioner off, I do get the fan turning on to a level that I think you're referring to that could easily be covered by the volume of my reciever.

But the original problem I had would have required much more than 600W....and seeing that I live in an apartment I think I'd have some very pissed off neighbors at that point.
