Low level hum on Marantz sr8001

2385 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  dbelon
I'm getting a low level hum on front and rear speakers from my sr8001. I previously had a ground fault on my system that was eliminated by using a cheater plug on my Rotel RB1080. Now I'm wondering if the noise is being caused by the toroidal transformer in the sr8001. I've isolated the noise to the receiver but haven't been able to get rid of it. Overall, I've been impressed with the sound of the Marantz but now I'm thinking of trading it for the Onkyo 805 which has better bass response or maybe the sr7001 without the toroidal transformer. Anyone else having similar problems with their sr8001?

Thanks,

Dennis

Sometimes one of your interconnects may be picking up interference, and the fix is as simple as a new set of interconnects. Worth checking. I had a hum on my B&K amp and was troubleshooting for a ground loop problem. Turns out it was just a bad interconnect.
You disconnect all sources and still have this hum?

Yes, I pulled the power cord on each component one by one trying to locate the culprit.
What about speaker cables? Did you pull those one by one? And do you hear it in every channel?

Not the power cord. Unhook them from the AVR's inputs. Only real way to make sure here.
Yes, it is coming through all channels. Marantz said to try reseting the amp to see if it clears the problem so I'll give it a try..........

So far I've only taken the external power amp and cable box completely out of the mix. No connections at all. The rest is connected via HDMI exclusively, except for the 5.1 analogs on my DVD player. At this point I think I'm going to exchange the AVR. I just hope I don't have the same issue with a new unit. Already spoke with Marantz tech support and they confirmed there should not be any buzz or hum coming from the AVR.
Did some more troubleshooting and found the hum seems to increase as I increase volume on the AVR. I also completely disconnected the Rotel and I can still hear the hum in the rear channels. Looks like the sr8001 is going to the service center next week.
