Low offset DLP

1690 Views 21 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  PeterNYC
Can anyone recomend some DLP models that have a small offset. My ceiling is only 8 feet high, and I want to try to do a 116" screen, but many of the PJ's I have looked at have offsets such that the bottom of the screen would be too close to the floor.

I would like to try to stay in the $1500 range

The only one I can think of near $1500 is the Benq 7700, with zero offset. The Infocus IN76 is more money. The Sharp DT500 may be one.
Be careful of the 7700. It has bulb problems that no one has confirmed were fixed.

The DT500 has a 15% offset which would make the picture 2 feet from the ground with a 6 inch drop from the mount.
Looks like I don't have a lot of options. My intial plan was an LCD, either Z5, or Panny 100, but people kept telling me DLP is a better option, but from what I have seen, for my situation, I am much better of with an LCD that has lens shift.

Fortunatly, I still have a while to figure it all out.

I believe the offset is closer to 8%
The new Optima HD73 has an offset of around 6-7% I believe. It should be shipping late January or early February but I don't know what the street price is going to be but I have heard it will be South of 2k.

It is also a DarkChip3 with a 5X 6 segment color wheel. More info should be unfolding soon depending on your timeline.

The DT-500 offset is 15%. The top of a 116" screen could be anywhere from 7"-9" below the projector lens when ceiling mounted due to its limited image shift. It can be purchased for the original posters stated price limit. In high brightness mode this projector is very bright with good black level and rich colors.

Where did you read this? I thought the HD73 offset is going to be the same as the HD72 offset.

how close to the floor is too close?? my 108" screen is 28" from the floor with no keystone and 8' ceilings (HD70 =28% offset) a 118" screen should still be over 20" from the floor.....? How about mounting it on a low coffee table shelf....then it would be close to the ceiling. (and you deal with the neck cramps from looking up
)

My HD70 is shelf-mounted at 6.3'. I have to tilt it up a little bit to keep the bottom of the image 35'' from the ground. It works out just right. You have plenty of options with dlp projectors.

I looked at the mits 100, and with a 35% offset, my screen would only be 17" from the floor, which to me is too close, especially for two rows of seats. If I could do 24" I would be a happy camper.

The HD70 would give me 21 inches, but that is not including any space lost because of the ceiling mount, which I figure would be another 5-6 inches.

I could go with a slightly smaller screen, but I really don't want to, especially if I can accomplish my goal with an LCD.

Sorry, misread the manual. Upon closer inspection it is ~ 6.4 degrees and the projected image is 25.54 degrees making the offset about 25%. I had never seen offset quoted as a matter of degrees before.
My 7700 has like 1500 hours on the bulb. Still looks beautiful.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have 7' 8 inch ceilings. I wanted the Infocus IN76. But due to offset issues, I would have had the screen about 21 inches off the ground.

I prefer 28 or 30 inches off the ground, since I will have 2 rows of seating. So LCD it will have to be.

I considered the Panasonic AX100 -- but feel more comfortable (for quality reasons), with the Epson 810. Even though it is more expensive than the AX100.

I has even more lens shift than the AX100, plus a sharper picture.

If you really want DLP -- (believe me I researched this heavily) -- the lowest offset will be the Infocus IN76. Its at 16%.

I think I have pretty much decided to stick with LCD. I can deal with slightly inferior black levels, it allows for more flexible placement.

Yeah, me too. I'm probably going with the Epson 810 (had considered the Panny AX100).
