Hello,


I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V465 and a the Energy Take 5 pack. Connected to the receiver are the 5 speakers, an Energy ES-10 subwoofer, a PS3 (slim), Xbox 360 and a DirecTV HR22/100. All sources are connected to the receiver via HDMI.


Overall I'm very happy with the setup, however I have been noticing that voices are coming through at a lower volume than sound effects. I notice this more on BD from the PS3 than any other source. I have the PS3 setup to output Bitstream to the receiver.


I have a Bose VCS-10 center channel speaker that I use in another room of the house, with that connected the voices come through even lower.


I tried raising the level of the center channel on the receiver, but that lead to some distortion that I was not comfortable with, does anyone have any ideas where my issue might be? I understand that this is a difficult issue to assess without having your own ears in the room, but any help would be appreciated.

Well, it might be that everything is working right. Movie mixes sometimes seem to drown the vocals in the sound effects. Your speaker location and quality might matter. The receiver you have is a budget model whose power will be a bit limited. That could effect how clean dynamic sections in movies sound.


See if you can turn on something like Dynamic Range Control, or an option that will reduce dynamic range. That might help. If you can locate the center channel speaker better (better would be at ear level), or aim it at your ears more, that might help.

Thanks for the tips Michael! I took a look at the receiver and changed the Dynamic Range setting to Min/Auto to see if that helps out at all. If not I'll try the other settings it has. My seating position is such that the center channel is directly in front of me and only about 3" below ear level, but i'll try putting a few books or something under it to raise it up a little for testing.
