Lucifer to do 'bloody' musical episode in season 5

Lucifer is alive with the sound of music.

EW has exclusively learned that season 5’s 10th episode will be a full-blown musical episode. Titled “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam,” (wonder who speaks that line of dialogue…) the hour will feature multiple musical numbers and shouldn’t be confused with the final season’s fourth episode, which is 1940s noir themed and contains two song performances.

Music has always been a big part of the WBTV drama’s DNA going as far back season 1. In fact, showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson have always wanted to do a musical episode but were waiting until they came up with the right story.

“We wanted to have a real grounded story reason why they’re signing and dancing, and not just, ‘Oh, this is going to be the one where everybody sings and dance,'” Modrovich tells EW. “It’s been a little game of Tetris [planning the episode] but it’s super fun. It’s going to be amazing. It’s going to be just such a bucket list thing for me.” At the moment, though, they’re keeping the story’s details close to the chest.

Lucifer‘s final season is shaping up to be an exciting one: 24‘s Dennis Haysbert has been cast as God, Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) is taking a trip to hell, and Tricia Helfer will also appear.

Lucifer returns for its bifurcated fifth season later this year on Netflix.

This story has been updated to note that the musical installment will be season 5’s 10th episode.

Singer Debbie Gibson joins Lucifer musical episode

Debbie Gibson is about to be lost in the Devil’s eyes.

EW has learned that the “Lost in Your Eyes” and “Foolish Beat” singer will appear in Lucifer‘s recently announced musical episode, the cheekily titled “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam.” Gibson, who will indeed sing in the installment, is playing Shelly Bitner, a controlling helicopter mother who won’t let her teenage son JJ have any say in his own future. Check out an image of her on set with Lucifer himself, Tom Ellis, above.

At the moment, we don’t know what causes all of the characters to break out into song in the episode; however, the showrunners are confident they’ve come up with a great reason.
“We wanted to have a real grounded story reason why they’re signing and dancing, and not just, ‘Oh, this is going to be the one where everybody sings and dance,’” co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich recently told EW of the final season’s 10th episode. “It’s been a little game of Tetris [planning the episode] but it’s super fun. It’s going to be amazing. It’s going to be just such a bucket list thing for me.”

Lucifer will return for its bifurcated final season on Netflix later this year.

I’m really looking forward to the Lucifer musical episode. The Buffy series’ musical episode, Once More With Feeling, is one of my all time favorite episodes of a TV series.

Lucifer final season first look: Inbar Lavi's Eve returns in exclusive alluring photo

She’s back!
EW has exclusively learned that Inbar Lavi will guest star as Eve in the fifth and final season of Lucifer. There are no details yet on what brings the first woman back, but you can check out an exclusive and alluring first look at Lavi’s return above.

The Imposters alum first appeared as Eve in season 4, which saw Eve abandon heaven in order to reconnect with her devilish ex-boyfriend Lucifer (Tom Ellis), who was going through his own identity crisis in the wake of Chloe (Lauren German) discovering the truth about him. In a surprising twist, though, Eve ended up developing a romantic connection with Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt); however, after defeating the demons who tried to kidnap Baby Charlie, Eve decided to leave Maze and set off on a journey of self-discovery.

“We are so excited to have Inbar back!” Lucifer showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson told EW in a statement. “Last we saw her, Eve broke Maze’s heart. Soooo… a reunion between our favorite demon and the original sinner should go smoothly, right?”

When the new season picks up, Maze is still recovering from that heartbreak. Luckily, she has a friend in Chloe, who is going through something similar because Lucifer returned to Hell right after she admitted she loved him.

German added: “We’re both heartbroken together because I’m missing Lucifer and she doesn’t really admit it but Maze is heartbroken from Eve leaving. She’s trying to forget about that as well, so we are going through a work/party phase together [in] episode 1.”

Season 5 is shaping up to be exciting. 24 alum Dennis Haysbert is set to appear as God — a.k.a. Lucifer and Amenadiel’s heavenly father — and the show is also staging a musical episode.

Lucifer will return for its bifurcated final season on Netflix later this year.

Lucifer Twist: Netflix Wants to Keep the Show Going Beyond 'Final' Season 5

uh oh. Trouble in hades.

Lucifer Season 6 in Jeopardy Over Potential Tom Ellis Contract Dispute

Multiple sources tell TVLine exclusively that re-
negotiations between Tom Ellis and Warner Bros.
Television for a potential sixth season of the Netflix
drama have come to a standstill, with the actor
allegedly rejecting the studio’s latest offer. As TVLine
reported earlier this year, Ellis already has a Season 6
deal in place, so depending on the circumstances, his
failure to honor the existing deal would put him in
breach of contract.

Despite having what appears to be the legal upper
hand, Warner Bros. TV has, per sources, gone back
and “sweetened the pot” multiple times. “Everyone wants
Tom to be happy,” says the insider. “But there’s a limit,
and it’s been reached.”

‘Lucifer’ Star Tom Ellis Closes Deal To Return, Paving Way To Season 6 Renewal By Netflix

A sixth season of Lucifer is moving closer to reality after star Tom Ellis has closed a deal to return as the title character.

Netflix earlier this year started talks with series producer Warner Bros. TV about another installment of the comic book drama beyond the upcoming fifth season, which had been billed as a final installment. Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, who have been steering the show, quickly closed new deals for another season.

It took lengthy, difficult negotiations with Ellis but he also recently signed on to return. The rest of the cast are also on board, sources said. With all key pieces in place, Netflix is expected to proceed with the pickup.

The plan had been for Lucifer to go back into production in September on Season 6, though the show will need to first finish filming Season 5, which was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lucifer started on Fox, which canceled it after three seasons. Netflix rescued the series, extending its run by two seasons. Last summer, the streamer renewed the show for a fifth and “final” season. While 4-5 seasons is typical length for a successful Netflix series, and Lucifer has produced more episodes than a regular Netflix original series (its seasons vary between 13-26 episodes in length), the drama, starring Ellis, has remained a strong performer on the streaming platform.

At 77 episodes through five seasons, Lucifer is already one of the longest running Netflix original series whose episode count is between veterans Orange Is the New Black (91) and House Of Cards (73).

Lucifer, based on the comic book characters created by Neil Gaiman for DC’s Vertigo Imprint, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for Vertigo, stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Scarlett Estevez and Kevin Alejandro.

The series follows the charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Ellis), helping LAPD detective Chloe Decker (German) take down criminals.

Lucifer is produced by WBTV in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. The series is executive-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Joe Henderson, Ildy Modrovich, Sheri Elwood and KristieAnne Reed.

Wonder Woman 1984, Lucifer, 'Snyder Cut,' more set for huge virtual DC event

By Chancellor Agard

The Flash, Wonder Woman 1984, and every other DC Comics show and movie may not be participating in this year's San Diego Comic-Con, which went virtual in the wake of the pandemic. That's because Warner Bros. is actually planning its own virtual fan experience centered around the comic book publisher's many properties for August.

On Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. PT, Warner Bros will launch DC FanDome, a free global online event boasting big announcements and new content from across the DC's TV, movies, games, and comics, and only available for 24 hours, the studio announced Tuesday morning. As of right now, the massive endeavor will include the cast and creators of the following DC titles: Aquaman, The Batman, Batwoman, Black Adam, Black Lightning, DC Super Hero Girls, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, DC’s Stargirl, Doom Patrol, The Flash, Harley Quinn, the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League, Lucifer, Pennyworth, SHAZAM!, The Suicide Squad, Supergirl, Superman & Lois, Teen Titans GO!, Titans, Watchmen, Young Justice: Outsiders, and of course, Wonder Woman 1984. You can also expect some news about WB Games and comics, too.

How will all of this be organized, you ask? Well, according to the press release, there will be six "different, fully-programmed areas inside the virtual DC FanDome." The main one is the Hall of Heroes, which is where you'll be able to watch all of the panels, reveals, and special programming. Beyond that, though, you can visit DC WatchVerse, which has eve more panels, screenings, and never-before-seen content; DC YouVerse, which spotlights fan-generated content; DC InsideVerse, which focuses on the creative minds behind everything you love and will begin with an introductory video from DC Publisher/CCO Jim Lee, President of DC-Based Film Production Walter Hamada, and Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti; DC KidsVerse for younger fans; and DC FunVerse, where you can find merchandise, a comic book reader, shareables, and more.

DC FanDome will be available in at least 10 different languages — Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish — and will feature content for specific countries, too.

In other words, there's a lot going on. It'll be interesting to see what exactly is shown in terms of new trailers and sneak peeks given that some of the shows and movies were in various stages of production before the industry shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DC FanDome is the latest online-only event to pop up in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. After San Diego Comic-Con was canceled for the first time ever in April, it was announced that it was moving online for an at-home version. Similarly, ATX Television Festival just wrapped up its own at-home experience, and several film festivals will or already have followed suit.

DC FanDome launches Aug.22 on DCFanDome.com.

Lucifer Officially Renewed for Season 6 — Its 'Final, FINAL Season'
By Matt Webb Mitovich

It is now, truly and finally, official: Netflix is not done dancing with the devil.

The streaming giant announced on Tuesday that it has renewed Lucifer for a sixth and “final, FINAL” season, after indicating over a year ago that Season 5 would be its farewell run. The news comes three weeks after leading man Tom Ellis formally agreed to the terms of his new Season 6 deal, following a months-long standoff.

An episode count for Season 6 was not announced.

As TVLine reportedly exclusively back on Feb. 13, Netflix had been in talks with Warner Bros. Television to extend the supernatural-tinged procedural’s lifespan beyond the forthcoming fifth and “final” supersized season, which like the rest of Hollywood suspended production in mid-March (with only the season finale left unfinished). Season 5 will consist of 16 episodes that will air in two separate, eight-episode batches, the first of which lands Friday, Aug. 21.

Likely bolstering Lucifer‘s longevity was the fact that it proved to be a helluva binge, so much so that its Season 5 pickup came just 29 days after its Season 4 release — meaning, within Netflix’s critical “first month” timeframe. Lucifer Season 4 also ranked as the No. 1 binge, as measured by TV Time, for a record eight straight weeks, on its way to becoming the app’s the most-binged program of 2019.

Lucifer was “rescued” by Netflix in June 2018, weeks after its cancellation by Fox. At the time, Tom Ellis called the fan backlash to the cancellation — and subsequent #SaveLucifer campaign — “nothing short of ridiculously overwhelming.” The 10-episode fourth season, which was released on Netflix in May 2019, found the titular devil dealing with both a pesky priest and the return of his very first girlfriend, Eve (as in “Adam and”). One month later, Netflix announced that it had renewed Lucifer for a fifth season.
