I have the Black Magic SDI to HDMI converter. Lumagen themselves have tested it and gave it the thumbs up. It has 2 SDI inputs, one has priority over the other, so you get 2 SDI inputs in the 1 box. The XS also has an SDI input option for a few extra dollars, I think it's only SD, but that should be fine for you.

OK, but here's the million dollar question: Does the BlackMagic or Gefen converter output 480-i- YcBcR out the HDMI jack? If the external converter outputs 480p, then there's no point in a good processor after it. The whole point of using the Lumagen, at least for me, is to get the de-interlacing they provide. If we let a cheap conversion box do that, then what good is the Lumagen scaler? You might as well just feed the 480p into the display.

I need to be assured the running SDI to HDMI means the converter outpits 480i withou any other alterations to the data. The Lumagen must also accept 480i HDMI.

I don't have this particular SDI-HDMI converter, but of course it does output 480i. Everything else would be out of the question. 480p is neither a SDI nor a HD-SDI standard. I have a bigger Blackmagic Converter box (everything to everything) and it handles SDI to HDMI just like the smaller boxes should. 480i in, 480i out.

An interesting question would of course be if it's handling video vs. PC levels correctly, but maybe fatjulio can answer this question.

480p is an HDMI standard. So is 480i but less known. My concern is the conveter box will take in the 480i from the SDI and output 480p. It makes sense they would do that as few if any displays would accept 480i over HDMI even though it is allowed in the HDMI spec. Remember these converter products are targeted towards display usage.

Are you sure your Blackmagic box is outputting 480i over HDMI? Just because it works doesn't mean it's 480i. It could be 480p and the Lumagen will just take that right in.

Yes, it keeps 480i (576i for me) and YcBcR 4:2:2 colour space, as reported by the info page on the Radiance.

It's a HDMI standard, right, but not specified for SDI connections.

definitely, I'm using a Multibridge Pro for capturing, but have used it as a converter before. SDI to HDMI (480i to 480i works fine). The Blackmagic converters don't have any hardware deinterlacing features.
