I've had my Magnavox for some time now and it has started to freeze up on me, it won't even turn off with the power button. I have to unplug it for a few minutes and then every thing is fine.


Also, the hard drive will spin up once in a while as well, even when the machine is off.


Are these two issues normal for this unit?

It sounds like the machine is getting a bad time signal. If you have Autoclock "ON" the hard drive should spin up at noon and midnight every day to attempt to reset the time. Unfortunately, a fair number of us have started to receive bad signals (or no signal at all) since the digital TV transition. A bad time signal can cause lockups.


You may want to try Autoclock in Manual mode (where you tell it which channel number has the time signal you are looking for -- PBS/CBS/Fox/etc). If that doesn't work, turn it Off. If you still observe both of these problems with Autoclock Off, I'd be very surprised.

I just now ran into a possible explanation for freezing with power on.


Important Note:


There has been at least one person who reported that their DVDR seemed to be constantly in clock-search mode, and we never had any explanation... just maybe a "broke clock."


I just did a an Auto Clock > Manual test that might explain some clock "anomolies" like that one and more.


I decided to see what OTHER channels I might have that had a good time signal (using The 11:57 Procedure ) besides my rock-solid FOX analog 6 and inconsistent PBS.


I first tried my cableco's "Local Origination" channel, analog 2, on my 2160 cuz it seemed to have s time element in addition to local weather conditions, etc. I thought that might be a good prospect, but it turned into the "DVDR death ray and zombie maker"!


That channel kept the time search going for 15 minutes! I finally got tired of waiting and turned the 2160 off, then after 20 sec or so, turned it back on and noticed the clock was set one day ahead to Jul 31!


I reset the date and time to 11:58, re-set my good FOX analog 6 in Manual box, BUT NOW I COULDN'T TURN THE 2160 OFF!


Tried every button on remote and front of unit and only PLAY/FF/REW/PREVNEXT would work to play a title it selected, but finally had to pull the power cord to get it to shut off.


I tried to duplicate this freezing effect but the unit turned off normally, maybe cuz I didn't let it search that bad local channel as long, or it's just a random occurrence?


To me, this suggests more strongly that an all-channel Auto Clock search *could* (randomly) lead to unusual problems, depending on the type of signals the channel search might run into in a user's particular system.


An 11:57 Procedure and setting the Auto Clock for a Manual, single-channel search is recommended, even if you can't confirm a good time signal on ANY channel... setting Auto Clock ON or Manual extends the power backup time from 30 sec (with Auto Clock OFF) to 2-3 minutes, or more in some instances... like my recent overnight total power loss miraculous preservation!


If using Manual for more backup time only, just make sure you select a "benign" channel like analog FOX or CBS... not PBS, which is notoriously unstable and inaccurate... and definitely not a local cableco/community channel.

On your pic quality, is there anything in this help file that might "help" your situation with the 2160? My PQ in my basic (analog) cable sub. is excellent as are many others with cable, OTA and sat, so I'm hoping it might be something in your particular setup or TV service feed?

This may be coincidence, but, when I changed my clock setting to manual, it not only stopped freezing up, but it seems that it has better reception.


Is this possible, or am I just imagining this.

I would recommend turning off Daylight Savings Time being automatically set.


I found a few years ago, when clock was set to auto and DST was auto, the 2 Phillips VCRs I have started every so often changing clock time on their own..to a wrong time, which if I hadn't noticed would have messed up my timer recordings.


I found if I turned these features off auto and did the setting myself, there has been no problem since then. They keep time perfectly.


A couple of months ago I got a Toshiba VCR/DVDR combo and left the default as Auto. A few days later, I saw the combo not only had the wrong time but had lost or gained a few days..the date was not correct anymore. I went into General Settings and took both setting the clock and DST off auto and have had no problems since. It keeps perfect time and date now.


Don't know why clock settings should act peculiar but I see from your topic that clocks are still affecting units.
