Magnepan, citation, denon - advice?

385 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Jeffrey
I recently got bit by the auction bug and bought a citation 5.1 as the start of a two-channel system. I have an opportunity to buy a used pair of magnepan mg3a speakers for a decent price ($800).

Would any of you maggie owners out there advise using these speakers in a smallish (11x13) room?

I'm thinking about initially using a denon dv5000 as a cd player. The player has good dacs and variable analog outs. I believe I can just connect this to the citation and I'm good to go for now.

Any advice? I've heard the newer maggie models and good things about the mg3. But I haven't heard the older model and can't prior to buying them from afar.

Buying older maggies without a listen is pretty dicey. It will cost more to repair panel damage than the purchase price of the speakers (this is factoring in shipment to and from Magnepan). There's nothing worse than a buzzing panel intruding on the enjoyment of a symphony. While I have purchased used maggies without a problem, I've always purchased them locally with the understanding that I could return them if I was unhappy.

Also, maggies need to be a minimum of 3 feet out from the back and side walls and they require a lot of acoustic treatment for good sound. You may be better off starting with a smaller pair of maggies and spending money on room treatment with an eye towards purchasing a larger pair when one comes available locally.
Here's a "from the factory" no risk deal on some smaller magnepans. I have a set and like 'em (particularly for piano and acoustical guitar music).\\ http://www.magnepan.com/magdeal.html

As far as ebay goes, hmmm... Try this: go to the ebay DVD section. Pick out a DVD, then go to www.dvdpricesearch.net and get the best "web" price for a new one. Notice how it's more on ebay? Try the same thing with stereo (or digital camera) gear and www.pricescan.com . Notice a trend here? Much of this is just "how it is" with online auctions with the general public involved.

I have noticed more reasonable prices (and better gear) at www.audiogon.com

Has anyone in Canada taken advantage of the MMG offer? I am wondering how difficult the process of getting them to Canada is, and which of the various taxes are actually charged.

Hi Craig. I don't know the specifics, but there must be significant costs in bringing the MMGs into Canada. I have a used set for sale, and a guy in Canada offered me $500 for them (the price of new ones), but he wanted me to be dishonest on the "contents" part of the shipping label. I declined.

I thought you might find the story helpful.
