Magnetic field from subwoofer harming Reel-Reel?

304 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  Dave McRoy
I just bought a Tascam BR-20T ( http://www.tascam.com/ProductsTemplate.cfm?Category=Open_Reel&ProductName=BR-20 ) and I'm wondering where I should put it. My rack is completely filled up with components so that is out of the question. I do have a black metal table with a glass top (its basically a box with no sides, just corners) in which I put my subwoofer in. I'm thinking of putting the R-R on the glass above the subwoofer. It'd look very good there but I'm wondering whether or not the magnetic field around the subwoofer would cause damage to the R-R? Thanks for any input.

The heads of tape decks can become magnetized if exposed to a sufficiently strong electromagnetic field. This might result in excessive noise in the form of hiss during playback. The tapes themselves may also become partially erased when exposed. The precise amount of EM exposure at which a problem with deck performance or tape erasure becomes an issue varies with the deck in question or with the kind of tape in question, however. As a rule, unless you can measure the EMF coming from the subwoofer with a flux meter and compare the reading with what might be considered a safe exposure for your deck and tapes, I would advise avoiding such a location.
