Major Nelson says that PS3 Online won't be free

He basically provides a link ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8qhMg3NvJ0 ) showing a slide that has the following information from Sony's E3 presentation:

Kaz Harai clearly states "These basic services will be offered to Playstation users for free"

And as you can see on the diagram it says "Basics Services"

- Account management (This probably implies you create an account which you can universally log on from different PS3s, and of course configure the basic options of the account )

- Ranking (Self explanatory)

- Player Profile (Self explanatory)

- Latest Info (We'll have to see how this one is fleshed out)

- Friendlist (A friendlist it just that, a friendlist)

- Voice Messaging (Probably talking about the ability to have voicechat in games and outside of games, it's there just because it needed to be confirmed)

- Text Messaging (Probably e-mails, or sending SMSs to mobile phones)

- Video Chat (Buy an Eyetoy and you can chat with video)

However, there is another link ( http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12205 ) to an article with Phil Harrison, stating "Mr. Harrison then clarified something regarding the PlayStation Network, saying multiplayer play and features will be completely free. He didn't go into further details."

Hmmm, two contrasting claims. My bet is that Sony will be providing all of the services they listed above for free, and they themselves will NOT be charging for online play. However, I don't think that they built or will be building a unified service to allow for online play. I think they will be providing the basic services themselves, and then leaving the online play to the developers. Whether the developers charge people for online play will be up to them, just as it was with the PS2. If they do charge however, no one can say that Sony is charging for online gaming.

If this winds up being the case, will this have met your expectations for free online gaming? I have mixed feelings myself. I love the thought of free online gaming, but I am also skeptical about the quality they will deliver if indeed it is free.

Edit: I would add that I think Sony will basically guarantee free online play for 1st party games, but thats it. I believe everyone else will be on their own, which might not be that bad since other large 3rd party developers (Ubisoft, EA, Konami, etc.) already have servers of their own setup for the PC side.

If they just copied xbox live's service that would be good enough for me $50 a year isn't much either.
Wouldnt that be the suck if games charged a fee, I hope they dont go with free online play because FREE sucks when it comes to online gaming. Ps2 was most notable of that although dreamcast online was free and wasnt to shabby but still none the less...If it is free no money will be invested into it to make it better...People are not afraid to pay for online playing capabilities so charge damn it and make the service worth while and attract more people....

I foresee Sony trying to boost online as a marketplace for songs and garbage like that rather than actual gaming...It's sad.
I think a unified service is the way to go. When you leave it up to the developers your going to be left with a mix of different features per game, some good most bad or below par. On Xbox Live I love being able to instantly find my friends and invite them into a game. I always know what game they've been playing and when they were last on. It's the closest thing to sitting next to them on a couch.

Agreed. As much as I like PC gaming I like the idea of everything working together.

For me, nothing compares to choosing through a long ist of hosted games on dedicated servers. This is one area where PC beats the 360 but not having some using different voice com software and gamespy or Xfire or what have you just doesn't make the whole thing cohesive enough.

This is where Live does that and then tieing everything into a whole market place strategy is the ceryy on top.

It seems to me like Sony doesn't really want to mess with a nice front end for everyone like with the PSP. The PSP could have kicked Ipod up and down but they failed to capitalize.

This is the problem with a company that is number one and doesn't really want to innovate. They have a hard head like with making hardware that is more challenging to program for and not giving consumers more choices and moving the experience forward.

Not really. It's far too big to compete well against the iPod, and there's no equivalent to the iTMS (or as you suggest, no equivalent to iTunes either). For music playback, the interface isn't as good as the iPod's either.
Just found a video of the UI of the PS3. Very interesting, it seems to be cut from the same cloth of the PSP UI.

Watching this, you can definitely see that the PS3 really is trying to get people to use this as their HTPC in their living rooms. The only real big worry that I have about the PS3 is that they seem to be concentrating on so many bells and whistles, most having nothing to do with it's core functionality of playing video games. I just hope that gaming on this machine doesn't suffer because of it.

If they do however provide a very Xbox like Live experience on the PS3 at no cost, they have gone a long way towards removing that doubt from my mind.
