MakeMKV and HD-DVDs

Well, HD-DVDs are dead, but MakeMKV didn't let that stop them from getting the app to rip HD-DVDs (finally). I read the upgrade notes on 1.6.x and saw something about improved HD-DVD... it is! I am currently ripping all 9 of my HD-DVDs. So far only one failed, Mozart - Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) [HD DVD] (2007), it wouldn't mount (using an LG GGW-H20L internal on a early-2009 Mac Pro 4-core Nehalem, 8GB RAM). If you have any HD-DVDs around, try ripping them.

Caddyshack won't rip either

Yes, MakeMKV makes at last HD-DVD (and Blu-Ray) playback possible on a (recent) Mac.

With 3 important caveats :

1) You cannot use FrontRow+Perian because of their abysmal playback performance (no HW acceleration); you have to use Plex.

But I much prefer the user interface of Front Row w/ DVDpedia plugin.

2) You loose all HD DVD (or Blu-Ray) Menu navigation capabilities.

3) AFAIK, you cannot get HD audio yet (beyond Dolby Digital 5.1), even through Mac 2010 HDMI. But that may be some MakeMKV temporary limit ?

Really, really sad that Apple chose to ignore Blu-Ray and that the alternatives (Plex, VLC) are not as simple to use as DVD Player or Front Row.

Since I only rip and store the main feature from BDs/DVDs/HD-DVDs I own I don't have any problem using Plex re; menus, use... it allows me to STOP/FF/FR/PAUSE/PLAY. All I need for watching a video in HD.

I definitely would love to have the HD audio, as well as subtitles, but I can always just slip the disc into the player if I feel the need.

for the subtitles, you can also use HB to create a compressed m4v that includes them - picture quality is very close to MKV IMO

MP4 and MKV are containers, not codecs.

Blu-rays can be ether VC-1,H264 or MPEG2, so an MP4 can contain the exact same material as an MKV.

Pretty sure if you use a frodo nightly of XBMC you will get the ability to play all HD audio over HDMI.
