I want to dub some demo tapes using two D-VHS decks!!! I have one JVC D-VHS deck. I am thinking of buying a Mitsubishi 2000U or another JVC deck to do this dubbing.

OK - I know one JVC and one Mitsub, connected by 1394, will be fine for dubbing OTA digital and HD stuff, and I will then be able to eliminate commercials, etc. like from the last Super Bowl and focus on highlites and on the HD ads like "The Matrix".

But lets say I also want to take some best clips from my D-Theater collection to be dubbed to the demo tape. Can I copy from one D-Theater tape played on the JVC to a blank D-VHS tape on another JVC? Can I copy from one D-Theater tape played on a Mitsub to a blank D-VHS tape on a JVC D-VHS VCR? Or do the D-Theater tapes have copy protection which doesn't allow this even using the 1394.

I want to emphasize that the above is strictlyl for my own personal use and demoing. I will not be providing copies of any D-Theater material to anyone else, solely using dubs from tapes I have already purchased and own to create an even more exciting demo for my theater.

Any experts out there who can tell me re the above??? Thanks.

The D-Theater tapes won't even play in the Mitsubishi, so I'm not sure if you meant the other direction. In any case, as others have noted you won't be able to copy the D-Theater tapes in any way (unless somebody has come up with a hack).

I am interested in the dubbing thing, since I just got a new 30k delivered from Vann's today. After I send my first one in for the updates I should figure out how to do this for my cases where I have part of a movie on one tape and part on another.

I was wondering if the Mitsub could perhaps at least play the digital audio and video stream, encoded without change, through the 1394 to the JVC which would then record it.

And I was wondering if the JVC could play the digital audio and video stream, encoded without change, through the 1394 to another JVC which would then record it - and then you could play back the resulting D-Theater recording in a JVC or upcoming Marantz D-Theater D-VHS deck.

Has anyone tried either of the above?

Is anyone aware of the technical specs and that they clearly would not allow such dubbing???

There is no dubbing of D-Theater in any direction, period. The D-Theater encryption will prevent it from playing on the Mits, and the 5C "copy never" flags will prevent it from being passed over the Firewire connection of the two JVCs.

Vic, thanks. That was what I was afraid of. Good thing I have a hard to get copy of a D-Theater Demo tape with a bunch of HD movie clips - so I don't need to put in various tapes and navigate to the right chapters. HAAA!

I think I'm gonna pickup a Mitsub 2000U D-VHS deck for $350 tomorrow to use as a second D-VHS deck and to dub OTA recorded stuff from one deck to [email protected]@@

Spencers TV in Mesa, Az. Except turns out salesman was wrong, its $468.

They have 11 of the Mitsub 1100 D-VHS decks for --- [email protected]@@

The 1100 doesn't S-Video record - but it has exactly what I need, two 1394 ports, records and plays VHS (who cares) and records and plays D-VHS digital. I am checking right now - will the 1100 record HD as well as the 2000U deck? If so, I'm getting one, for all I want it for is HD dubbing.

Steve - watch it with the "[email protected]@@" - are you pulling another April fools on us?

Anyways - yes the 1100 does just fine for IEEE1394 recording, so that $150 is one heck of a deal.

I paid $500 each for my 2000U's so that price is hard to see now.

At that price I was going to pick one of these up to run through a 30k so I gave them a call. They were really nice, but it turned out that they really have these decks to sell as package deals with their Mitsubish TVs and purposely hadn't advertised them for standalone sale. They were going to sell me one to be nice, but I told them they should keep them for the people getting Mitsubishi TVs. I don't think the rest of us should buy up all their stock.

Steve,

Sounds like you got a great deal. I would pick one up if I were you (if you haven't already).

I just got a 2nd 30k last night on the deal at Vann's, but if another great deal on one of the Mitsubishis comes along I might get one of those. For a low enough price it would be useful for more reliable playback.

Oh man, this sucks! I had called early yesterday and placed an order for one with Vince, the internet sales guy, to be shipped today. Then today he calls me and tells me that they were deluged with calls (after the number was posted here) and the salesmen at the B&M store sold all of them without telling him! Hell, I placed the order first and I'm now left without one. Just great!

I just hope they were really sold to eleven different people and not just one guy looking to make a profit.
