Marantz 7500 - Repair or Replace???

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I have a problem and I couldn't think of a better place to get some sound A/V advice.

My Marantz SR7500 appears to have something wrong with it. Recently, the left front speaker has been dropping out on me and it's lasting longer and longer. In fact, right now, it's out and has been for days. In order to confirm that it wasn't speaker and/or wiring related, I re-terminated the banana plugs and reseated them. When this didn't work, I swapped the R and L speakers and the problem stayed w/ the zone and not the speaker. Finally, I moved the connections up to the front B plugs to make sure it wasn't related to the actual plugs on the receiver. The problem remained, even after going to B and switching over to the B speakers. Finally, I went into to the setup to run the speaker tone tests and all work, but the L front.

At this point, I think it's pretty much narrowed down to something under the hood. My knowledge of the inner workings of receivers is weak at best, so I can't narrow further.

So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone has ever had something like this happen w/ a receiver and whether the repair was a reasonable expense. I'm well out of warranty and really don't want to put down more than $100 to fix a relatively old receiver. I'm not necessarily in the same market for receiver ($700+) that I used to be financially, so I could replace it for say $250-400, which makes an expensive repair seem somewhat futile.

A lot of people like those old beasts. There are ways to use it as a zone amp(run zone 2 into its multi-channel input), but beyond that, its days as a primary receiver are over.

You could always sell it for parts, somebody might give you $75-$100 for it. Those still sell on the used market just above $200(approaching $300 for really clean ones).

At $400, your options are really good. Onkyo NR609/RC360/370(refurb 370 are already just above $400). Denon 1912/2112, I've already seen 2312 sell in the $400's. Yamaha RX-V667/867(one of the best from last year). Marantz SR6005 open box at BB for $450(the 5005 even less).

What are your speakers and your "other wants" and we can help narrow down some receiver choices.

NAS?

Networking?

VHS/Wii?

How many HDMI?

Turntable?

You also don't have to buy new. Lots of HDMI 1.3 out there from 2-3 years ago that are being sold cause they only have 2-3 HDMI and people wanting/needing 5-6.

Im not sure how old your receiver is but I have older HK receiver thats doing the same thing. My tech said it had notorious DSP problems. The amp section works fine as it has direct amp inputs and Ive tested it so Im keeping my old receiver for use as a cheep amp when I have a need for a big multichannel amp....

Your marantz may have DSP problems or it may be as small as cold joints in the amp board or bad transistors. Its really hard to say. I know repairs like this can range a few hundered dollars as Ive had a denon I needed to get fixed for a customer and it was a 220.00 repair. It blew a transistor in the main amp channels.

Thanks for the quick response.

Speakers - Running Axiom speakers. Though not purchased as a set, the components are mostly equivalent to the Epic 60 package

Desires/Setup:

1. HDMI switching desired - prefer more than 3 rear

2. Components - DVD, Wii, WDTV (media player), Cable Box, Sony CD Carousel

3. Networking not a must, but some of the functions look appealing. Similarly, IPhone control looks interesting. Neither of these are a must.

What prompted this post is that I combed around and found receiver options like the NR609, which were sub-$400 and seemed to have more functionality than I need, while meeting my min requirements. Within that context, it's hard to swallow the idea of dropping say $150 on repairs when you could apply that to a receiver w/ functionality well beyond what you are fixing.

LOL....The wife would divorce me in a second if I did that. She appreciates my hobby, but the financial times just don't allow such expenditures anymore. Plus, now that we have kids and no more basement theater (sigh

), time spent immersed in multimedia is much more sparse. So, though I appreciate the quality of Marantz, it's hard to justify the expense.

TURBODOG....How did you find the NR609 for under 400.00? Its more expensive then that if your talking retail price?

I have sold MANY NR609's and quite honestly its a very good receiver and I think if you got one youd be extreamly happy with it.

On the other hand Ill PM you I may have something that will blow your mind!

Yep, $400 and authorized. It is weird the 609 is less than the RC360. Must be running low on the 360.
