Marantz NR 1504

Panasonic 60VT60

NHT Absolute Zero - left and right

NHT TwoC Center

NHT b-10d - sub

ATT UVerse

Apple TV

Harmony 650

I just hooked everything up on Tuesday and I'm noticing that the volume on the Maranzt has to be around 40 before any sound from what's on tv starts coming out. Volume for normal everyday listening is around 68-70. Does that sound normal for a Marantz, or is there a setting I'm missing?

Thank you

Thank you. I was wondering that as well. I would love a larger receiver, however, aesthetics played a major role in my decision to go with the Marantz. The speakers sound great with the 1504, just wondered about the volume.

Thanks again

When I purchased my 1504 receiver I came across the same problem and was disappointed at first. Straight out of the box the receiver has no dynamic volume or eq and needs to turned up to nearly the maximum volume to achieve any decent volume. The issue relates to dynamic volume which is not activated unless you have used the audyssey setup and mic to calibrates the system according to your speakers and room acoustics. See your manual for a more detailed explanation. Once you have performed that procedure you'll have the option of three dynamic volume settings. Light Medium and Heavy. The difference in volume and sound quality is unbelievable and I have every convenience that you'll have more than enough power for all situations. I've noticed reviews bag using any eq or dynamic volume but to me it's makes all the difference.

Thank you, when I had the VT60 calibrated, he properly tuned the receiver as well and now it's working great. However, I notice that the volume drops out on occasion for no apparent reason. While watching a show or movie, possibly at the beginning of a loud scene, the volume backs down drastically.....then quickly comes back up. Kinda of annoying, but it must be a setting I'm missing.

Have you noticed any similar problems?

I can suggest two possible solutions:

On your remote select DYN VOL and ensure that the setting is on Light. If you select Off no compression of the sound takes place and you'll go back to needing to have the volume up very high. This ensures the least amount of compression. If the setting is on High the volume of quiet parts of a film or music will be increased and the loud parts will be reduced (ie maximum compression)

You are also able to restrict the maximum volume level on the Marantz receiver. The level could be set to low and when it reaches the restricted level it automatically pulls the volume down. To check and adjust go to the Amp Menu and select System Setup, then Option Setup and you'll see if the volume level has been limited.

Adjust accordingly and probably set to around 80 if the maximum is 100.

Hope this helps..

Just for what it's worth the receiver's volume control is denominated in decibels. Every 10 dB is a factor of ten in power. So if the marantz goes to 100 on the volume dial, at 90 you get one tenth the power that would result from 100. At 80 you get 1/100 the power of the volume control at 100, and at 80 on the volume control you get 1/1000 the power of the volume control at 100. At 40, you get 1/1,000,000 of the power at volume setting 100. So it's not really turned up that far at 40 or even at 80.

I not sure if you are responding to my replies but given the issues you've desrcibed with the Marantz receiver, I suggest that you leave the volume as unlimited.  Most receivers don't have the option to limit the volume so its really not necessary to put any limitation on the receiver. I've only made suggestions based on your original problem.  I personally think having the receiver running at nearly flat out is not normal and you actually need more flexibility with a volume control.  Its definitely not because the amp is under powered  to run your speakers.  50 clean watts is plenty given some of the best stereo amps only produce 40 - 60 watts. I don't have any problem with control of the volume and most of the time I'm at 40 out of a maximum of 100.  Of course that's with the dynamic volume setting on light.
