Marantz NR1200

I am writing this as a separate thread, because the starter of the Marantz 2019 thread, did not want this device included for some reason.

I had a couple of questions in case anyone has some answers:

1. On their website, Marantz states that the NR1200 has "High-performance, high-resolution audio playback: Ability to decode high-resolution audio ALAC, FLAC and WAV lossless files up to 24-bit/192-kHz — plus, DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz tracks for high-resolution listening." As far as I can tell, it will convert everything to PCM then plays it. It will not decode DSD. The PCM light comes on, no matter what the digital audio source is. Can anyone else confirm this?

2. There was a new update that was applied last night to my NR1200 unit, but I do not see any reference to it nor any explanation of what it included. Does anyone have the inside track on this?

a. For the same reason your AV8805 isn't included with the 2018 Marantz models, it's unique.
1. Like the other Marantz NR models, the NR1200 can only play 2CH DSD via Network/USB while the higher level models (like your AV8805) can also play multi channel DSD via HDMI and use DSD DIRECT.
2. Marantz doesn't generally post firmware change logs; however, the firmware update applied HEOS fixes and added Amazon Music HD.
Thanks for the reply. This Marantz model does not play DSD from HEOS nor from USB drive without first converting to PCM contrary to their advertising material. It does NOT decode DSD. This is according to their tech support. They will be changing their advertising in the USA to reflect that.

Hi, can you share with us how do you like your NR1200? I have NR1508 and this new NR1200 sounds very interesting for me, it has new features plus it is 2x75W (NR1508 is 50W/pc).

I'm interested in your impressions as well.
Going back to a 2.1 setup myself for simplicity.
The NR1200 sounds very good. The unit functions well and the sound is clean. It does drive 4ohm speakers and it is simple to use. what would you like to know specifically?

Good to hear.
It looks like they use a full screen GUI, that's good.
Are there any audio adjustments you can make? Probably just a bass boost?
Haven't had a stereo receiver in years so this is new ground for me.

You can adjust generic bass and treble up to plus or minus 6db. There are knobs on the unit and you can do so via remote as well.

What you mean by full screen GUI? I know that when I switch to HEOS on my remote, screen resolution switch to 576p (from 1080p) which is really ugly.

Nothing special, just what you think of it in general. What model of receiver did you have before? Can you tell me about HEOS, it is still 576p?
I had a Pioneer SX-N30 2-Channel receiver. It had no HDMI input/output and the audio streaming was not very good at all. I do like HEOS. It does a great job, but it cannot stream Qobuz, .iso or multi-channel files. I have not looked closely at the OSD during HEOS audio playback. I can take a peek later.

Good to know that it can drive 4 ohm speakers, any idea what the rating would be at 4 ohms - I would guess it would sit at around 90w/pc ?

Also, does the cross over work in the same way as it does in a multi-channel AV Receiver ? - as in Low pass and high pass when a cross-over is defined. So for example at an XO of 80Hz main L and R channels would roll off below 80Hz but a powered sub would roll off above 80Hz - for a 2.1 setup.
I don't have a subwoofer attached at the moment. From the manual it looks like you can set the low pass filter anywhere from 40hz to 250hz and the distance from 0 to 60ft

There is no Front L/R speaker crossover setting, rather only a Subwoofer LPF for LFE. You can use the Bass/Treble knobs to adjust speaker tone control.

Thank you for that very useful information. So this means that a full range signal is sent to both the left and right speakers.

So I presume the LPF is built into the NR1200 for the sub-out or does the sub-out send a full range signal too for use with the LPF of the sub ?

It would have been nice to limit the range of the L and R speakers too for when one is using bookshelf speakers but I guess overall it is workable and an interesting solution.

1. Correct.
2. Correct.

Thanks JD, I appreciate your input.

Are you using the NR1200? - would be nice to have your views for overall performance.

What speakers are you using with it and do you have a sub in the mix ?

No, rather just answering questions. :)
Thanks JD, that is nice of you.

I think it would have been nice to have "small" or "Large" speaker settings with the option to define XO values for small speakers - just like in multi channel AV receivers. This would have provided better bass management and protected bookshelf speakers when listening to music or watching movies at higher volume levels. A bit disappointing that such a feature has been omitted.

Hello, I just purchased the Marantz Nr1200 and I have some questions that i hope someone here can answer.

I've connected my TV with the HDMI Arc and my Nvidia Shield Pro in the CBL/sat. I use the Nvidia shield for my IPTV source.

For the most part I want the tv audio to be on the tvs built in speakers, and that works well.

But if i want to play a vinyl using the phono input and still have the video on the TV via Video Select, there is no audio on the tv.

Anyone here who know how to fix that? Or is it impossible?
