I have a Marantz SR 18 EX (gold chasis) that was working perfectly last night. this morning, no sound is coming from the speakers. Even the speaker test tone is not audible. the lights are on that indicate that it's getting a signal, but nothing. I confirmed that the speakers work (by hooking them up to another marantz receiver in the house.

I checked mute.

I checked to make sure that the inputs were setup correctly

Any way to do a hard reset on the device?

Is there a fuse or something I can replace? I can't imagine what it would be.

Anyone ever experienced this or have a work around?

Did you try unpluging it from the wall for 5 minutes and pluging it back in?

Parts for this unit are still fairly available.. You should be able to get it Serviced if need be....

if it comes down to it, try to send it to an Authorized Marantz repair center, they'll get their parts at Dealer Cost and won't mark them up horrendously...

Thanks for the feedback. I tried un-plugging it for an hour, no luck.

I'll look into the authorized service centers to see what's up.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi,

I have an SR 18 as well and last week my receiver did the same thing. I was in another room, and heard a pop. Then there was no sound. Audio just stopped working and test tones don't work either.

Has anyone determined if there is a fuse in the receiver that could have popped or another non-expensive solution?

Thanks.

If your receiver powers on and seems to decode signals, one or more amp channels are probably blown. As already mentioned, parts for this receiver are all still available.

I have had no problems with my SR-18 since I bought it in 2000. Keeping it clean inside and out helps.

My Marantz SR-18 just died last week (a "pop" followed by smoke).

It's served me well for almost 9 years. I considered getting it repaired, but the closest center is too far to take it to in person, and shipping this beast would be a real pain, so I ordered a new Pioneer Elite vsx 91 txh.

Sucks though...

Hello all, I just found this site as yesterday my sr-18 had the same issue. I was hoping that some of you with this problem might have found a fix since you posted and would share with me what you had to do to fix this.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me...

Hello- sorry to bump an old thread, but I have a quick question regarding my newly acquired SR-18ex. I had one of these several years ago but was unfortunately forced to sell it due to financial reasons. At the time I had it, I could have sworn that I was able to run the subwoofer in source direct mode (through the sub preout jack) along with the L/R mains. I know you can do this on newer receivers (including Marantz). I must be having a brain meltdown though, because on my new one there seems to be no way to do this. Even if you set the fronts to small on this receiver it still seems to completely eliminate any signal from the sub preout in source direct mode.

The explanation in the manual states that source direct mode bypasses bass management along with tone controls, therefore a sub that is connected through the sub preout from the receiver will not work in source direct mode. I realize that this was probably the correct thinking in engineering this unit, but even with full range B&Ws as fronts I feel I missing a little on the low end. I am a firm believer in the elimination of ANY additional artifacts in music listening so I love source direct mode, but really would prefer to run the sub with it out of the sub preout jack. I am obviously listening in stereo mode now so that I can get the sub to run with the mains, but is there any way to run this in source direct and still get the sub to work? Thanks

sb01,

If your subwoofer has both speaker level inputs and outputs, you can put it in between the front L & R outputs of the receiver and the inputs of those speakers and use the subwoofer's bass management to redirect the low frequencies from the L&R speakers.

Selden-

Thanks for the idea-

I had already thought of this but unfortunately it eliminates the possibility of also using the sub for the dedicated LFE channel for movies, which would have to come out of the sub preout jack. (The sub I am using also has line input/output, and the SR-18ex has preout/main in jacks for all channels, so i could do the same thing you are suggesting except at line level instead of speaker level, but I would still have the same problem.)

If I did connect it this way I would have to tell the receiver that there is no subwoofer, which in turn would tell the receiver to reroute any LFE information to the fronts, so in theory yes I would get the LFE information but it would be "muddled" in with the front channel information and not separate as it should be for true surround.

There is an option in the setup menu on this receiver to set the sub for either THX (dedicated LFE only) or L/R mix (which is supposed to activate the sub in 2-channel listening mode as well as 5.1), but even if I set it for L/R mix the sub is removed from the proceedings when I switch to source direct!

I think Selden's suggestion is the only way you could use your subwoofer along with your L and R fronts while in Source Direct mode. Personally, when listening to jazz, classical or anything with good vocals, I use Source Direct. But for rock music, I find myself needing output from the subwoofer so I cannot use Source Direct mode.

sb01,

If your speakers are reasonably good, then adding sounds together doesn't "muddle" those sounds. If it did, it would cause problems when listening to recordings of musical instruments playing simultaneously -- you wouldn't be able to distinguish those instruments from one another.

Sadly, some speakers and electronics are not very good, and do distort sounds enough that they get mushed together
