Well I have been trying to updade my reciever for the past month or so. I have had the worst luck purchasing one on the internet. The first was a Yammaha RX659. It worked fine but it was a little bright and edgy with my speakers. I returned it and got a HK 645 which sounded really nice for one day until it died. I decided to downgrade and got an HK 335 which was really impressive for the $270 I paid for it but it had a popping sound coming from the left rear channel so returned it.

Okay so for the Marantz. I did a lot of reading and heard about how good the Marantz handled music. I found the refurbed SR-8500 online for $699 and bought it. I have to say I am blown away with the sound of this thing. My Klipsch fronts have never sounded so warm and full. I am running SB2's for fronts, Beta360 Center and Beta ES250's for surrounds. It sounds incredible! I have heard people say that the Marantz was good for music but not for theatre. Well the SR-8500 sounds better to be in theatre than The HK645 an the Yammaha 659. And yes for music it is insane! I don't think there is a better deal out there for $699.

I like the marantz receivers as well. I have an SR-8400 and love the sound. Unfortunately, it randomly goes into fault requiring an unplug of the rear cord to make it stop the incessant clicking. I can get it fixed under warranty, but don't want to give up the three zone sound while they fix it

I use the "multispeaker" outputs for internally powered zone 2 and then I use the "multi" preouts for zone 3 powered by an external amp. I run them all at the same time occasionally.

I really like the unit, there just must be an internal short somewhere. I will get it fixed, I just don't want to give it up for that long in the beginning of summer!
