Just got a hold of a Marantz SR 9300 - it doesn't have a phono input, but am I able to hook up the RCAs into another input? Tape? and just run the ground wire into the ground for the Radio ? or do you need a PHONO input to decode and amp the sound properly ?

Hello therayderz.

I also own a Marantz SR9300 AVR. I think it's weird that a "music first" company like Marantz, would forego the phono input on their AVRs.

But, I do admire the quality and performance of the product. Despite the lack of HDMI inputs and the inability to take advantage of the new hi-rez audio formats, it's still a powerhouse AVR. For me to replace it, I would have to go with either the Yamaha RX-Z7/11, Denon AVR5308, Onkyo 905/6, or the Pioneer SC-07, to accommodate all of the equipment that I currently have (11 components) and to get the quality 2 channel playback capability. All well over $2K!
I could also go Pre/Pro with Multi-channel amp. Mo' Money!

Did you notice that I didn't list a current model AVR from Marantz?! There's a reason for that. They're now made in China and IMHO lack the quality and refinement of the previous generation models, such as the SR9600. Last of the Japan built AVR's from Marantz.

So far, other than the discovery of no phono input, how do you like your 9300?!

Regards.
