Well, my year long process of building a dedicate home theater is finally finished. The Marantz VP-12S1, which was two months late, was the last piece of the puzzle. The 100" diag. Firehawk, which had arrived a month earlier, is finally being put to good use.

The combination replaces a Toshiba 56H80, which now moves to the family room. The improvement to the feeling of being in a theater is dramatic. The larger picture is only part of it. Not dealing with the never quite perfect convergence with the Toshiba is great. The only negatives are that the RPTV does well in a moderately lit room where as the FPTV requires total darkness. The other negative is that the Marantz, which due to it's short throw is right over my head, is audible, though not disturbly so.

I used the Mount 12 to install the Marantz which caused the projector to be quite close to the ceiling. In order to prevent the picture from being too high, I had to angle the projector down slightly which resulted in having to apply a small amount (2 clicks) of electronic shifting (I forget the term) to square off the image. I was concerned about the degradation in picture quality this might cause, but I could detect any when flipping back and forth. Fixing this would probably require the use of a shelf instead of the mount. I'm in no hurry, however, as a really couldn't detect any picture degradation. Maybe it's because I'm much more picky and take more pride in my audio setup, which is pretty awesome.

The speakers are all Vandersteen models. Model 5 for the fronts, a VCC-5 center, 2 pair of VSM-1s for the sides and rears. The VSM-1 are augmented by 2 2Qws subs and the a V2W sub is dedicated to the LFE. This allows me to run all the channels full range.

The electronics are an Integra Research RDC-7 processor and RDA-7 amp, a Toshiba SD-9200 DVD player, which I use in interlaced mode. And finally, I have a Dish 6000 HD receiver for viewing HDTV programming that has not been connected yet. Although, I am curious to see how HDTV will look on with this setup.

I do have one major concern. I've had the projector give me a lamp failure warning during turn on, on two separate occassions. It required me to unplug the projector to reset it, after which it worked fine. I'm hoping this is just a breaking in glitch, but somehow I doubt it. If it starts to happen more frequently, I'll contact Marantz.

Sorry for rambling, but my friends aren't into this stuff. So I hope it's OK to vent my enthusiasm with you all.

Sounds like a nice setup - similiar to mine. My screen is 6 in. from the top of my ceiling in my HT room so I made my own pj mounts and it allowed me to have a square image at setup. Hmmm, I never had a lamp failure warning, even with my crappy first bulb. Hopefully it will be ok, do you have any flickering?

I have encountered only one Lamp failure Light warning on my second unit. Happened early on. Havent seen it since. Another user stated the same thing on another post. It could be a lot of things. Sometimes, even some condensation. I dont think there is a need to worry.

Vent away wem and congratulations on achieving your dedicated theater! I know exactly how you feel, wanting to tell someone how awesome your theater is and not many people understanding what the fuss is all about. I get more strange looks than shared enthusiasm!

I haven't yet had a lamp failure warning and hopefully yours settles down.

Enjoy!

Keystone correction.

Congrats Wem! My set-up is quite similar to yours including some of the electronics. BTW my installers made a custom mount to extend the PJ lower down from the ceiling to avoid the need for keystone correction. It was a pretty simple piece of metal that they had made in a day. If SE is your dealer, ask Evan to have one made for you...

The top of my screen is about 15 inches from the ceiling.

This is such a terrific projector. It makes the QC issues that much more annoying. I hope Marantz gets a handle on this reasonably quickly as Sharp did with the 9000.

wem,

I'm very curious: What is the distance between your ceiling and the top of your screen?

wem,

I understand your excitement...almost.

I'm still waiting for my FireHawk to arrive (damn, I hate backorders!)

Even without it, I must ask, can it actually get any better?

Best of luck to you and enjoy!!!

It seems I have a bizarre explanation for the lamp failure warnings. The projector is connected to a dedicated circuit. The only other thing connected to this circuit is the motorized firehawk screen. If I start the projector while the screen is coming down, the projector gives me the warning. When I wait for the screen to finish then start the projector everything is fine. I can't explain why, other than maybe the 15A circuit can't handle both the projector and the screen simultaneously. Does this seem reasonable?

vdelauz, I have only seen the projector on a my Firehawk and on a Grayhawk at a dealer. So, it hard for my to say how much of the picture is due to the screen.

wem,

it doesn't seem reasonable that a 15A circuit can't handle both the PJ and screen simultaneously, though i'm not an electrician by any means. can you set up the screen to work off a trigger, either from the PJ or your pre/pro?

I currently trigger the screen from a 12V convertor the came with the screen. The 12V convertor is connected to a different circuit for convenience sake. The dedicated circuit that projector and the screen use has outlets in the ceiling. I need to run a wire from the screen to the pre/pro or pj before I can get rid of the 12V convertor.

I just don't understand why any of this should matter. Maybe it just a coincidence that it fails when the screen is working. Although, its only happened in that scenerio.

Hopefully you bought your projector from an authorized dealer in the Marantz US network. If you did, surely the dealer can help resolve this issue with a quick phone call.

Goodluck and enjoy.

Hello, There is a chance that the screen motor is causing some interference with the projector, via a shared neutral wire. We have noticed from time to time, that typical screen motors, (as far as I know, the top four domestic screen producers use the same motors), can push some ugly spikes down the neutral wire, from the unpowered winding of the motor. Working with our suppliers of Low Voltage Controls, we have incorporated snubbers to drain the spike. The "Trigger" style controls have snubbers as well. This device could fail "open" and allow the spike on to the neutral. Separating the neutrals would cure this in any case. Many homes are wired with "three wire" circuits, electricians jargon for running two separate breakered circuits on opposite busses, with a shared neutral. This style of wiring lends itself to additional opportunity for interference. Send me a personal email, I will research your order and replace your control system.

Mike, I sent you an e-mail.

Thanks for looking out. I wish all companies provided this type of pro-active customer service. Needless to say, I appreciate any help you can give me.
