Marantz vs. Pioneer Elite?

1519 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  boviki
Hi all!

I'm new here so I won't bother you with lots of words. Just need a suggestion.

What's considered a better receiver, Pioneer Elite VSX-80TXV or the new Marantz sr5001 (or should I through the sr7001 for proper comparison?). I know they are both at the bottom of the pile of the high end, but that's where my budget lies at the moment. I am just a bit concerned with them being so cheap. Thanks.

I would choose Marantz. It does HDMI audio processing whereas Pioneer doesn't. I think the SR7001 is in a different league and more expensive than the other two. If you're not a serious audiophile, you'll be satisfied with either sr5001 or 80TXV. BTW, where do you buy the Marantz receiver? At a local store?

I don't know about the 80 but the 84 does hdmi audio processing
Thanks, I didn't know the 80 didn't process the HDMI audio. The 5001 looks like a very good deal and the name I like. I just ordered the B&W mt20 so I'm not building something really big. It just puzzles me to see an Elite at such a low price point. Are they cutting corners now? I am looking at Marantz locally. It's the store where I got my speakers.
boviki,

I just sent you a PM to ask you a question.

yes it does.
I thought it says passthrough. I know it does switching ( and we are talking 80 here, right?)

but does it process the sound out of the HDMI? BTW, how relevant is the 1.1 vs. 1.2 HDMI for DVD viewing (I don't have SACD and I'm not planning to have it either)
Features in a receiver is important, but how it sounds should be the basis of any decision.

My advise to you, is take a couple of CDs that you are familiar with and audition them.

Try to hear them in a similar setup that you will have.
You are right. In an ideal scenario I would have done it, however no one has those receivers yet and the speakers I'm buying are only available in stereo set up in the store. I did like a lot the way they sound. I'll have to try the receiver at home and if I don't like it - I'll swap it for something deferent. I'm sure though that Marantz will satisfy my needs and wants for this setup.
