This may have been covered before - it's hard to keep up. If it has, please don't flame me.


I wonder why Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City and others don't have PS3s along with the other hi-def players. By putting it only in the video game section, non-enthusiast/non-gamers may pass buy the PS3 and never consider them as a viable option.


Seems like it would make sense to include them among the other Blu-Ray players. Is this a Sony requirement (to mollify the other Blu-Ray player manufacturers)?

Nope, question of demographics and margins.


Retailers don't make much on the consoles, they make more money on the extras and software to support it. Thats why you see so many bundles at the retail level. Also a hot product launch can bring traffic into teh store to buy other stuff.


The PS3 may migrate a bit to the DVD area in the future, but right now Sony is not positioning nor marketing them that way. The Blu-ray drive is a bonus, not the centerpiece of the system. Of course that may change.
