I've been reading and reading articles on this site for months, but this is my first post so be kind. I'm finally ready to start purchasing STUFF for my HT. I have the opportunity to get a really good deal (legally) on Martin Logan's.

This is the setup I was thinking of going with:

MAINS - Aeons

CENTER - Theater

SURROUNDS - Scripts

SUB - not sure yet

AMP(s) - either a Sunfire 5ch or I can get Crown Macro's from my work

My HT will be used for movies, music, and video games. I haven't had the chance to really listen to them yet. The stores around me are very limited to what they have set up. Can these speakers handle anything that's thrown at them. How do they sound with action movies? I listen to a wide range of music, from Mozart to Metallica. How do they do with heavier music? Would a conventional speaker be better for what I want ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated greatly.

Guess it all depends on how loud you like to listen to them!! imo when you get them set up right they sound great with whatever you play on them. I have Accents for mains use a sunfire cinema 7 and actively bi amp the accents. (I listen to Tool, Korn, old Iron Maiden) average 90db but will do 105db no prob in my room. If ya want it louder then that may want to choose something else!

I have a hearing problem so I can't listen to rock anymore. And I live in an apt so I could never play them loud anyways. So I just listen to smooth jazz and they are phenomenal!! But even pop music they sound very good (U2, 80's new wave, Van Hallen).

My older, seperate HT doesn't use the MLs, but some day I may convert it when there are enough funds available.

Try this link. Its a dedicated Martin Logan website of hundreds of ML owners (they have a gallery there too!) Post your question there.

Personally, I don't think the Crown's would make a good match for the ML's. Don't get me wrong, they are great for sound reinforcement and also great as subwoofer amps (I use one myself).

Just my opinion.

Why haven't you had a chance to listen to them yet? I guess you're really not ready to purchase STUFF.;)

He already told you why in his 1st post:

Oh believe you me I'm ready. I guess I should have said I'm in the market.

I work in the entertainment industry and right now we are slammed. We sometimes have a little bit of a slow down period right before our busy season starts in Oct. Not this year. I managed to get out to two stores last week.

"Absolute Sound" sells B&W, Def Tech, and Paradigm. I listened to the Def Techs in one room (BP7002)without anything to A/B em' with. They sounded pretty good, but a little too boomy. Their other room didn't have the setup finished yet. I listened to the Paradigm Studio 100's without a sub (not finished) and even without the sub I was still impressed. I'll have to revisit them when they're done upgrading.

"Sound Advice" same company as Tweeter had a nice selection. I briefly listened to 2 pairs of ML's (as the store was getting ready to close) and was amazed. I will be going back there for a better listen.

I was looking for a little feedback on ML's to get a feel for them. Good for this but not that, type of thing. Because if they are as good as I've always heard, I wanna take advantage of this opportunity and get the best I can get. I still want to hear about other speakers but I should probably save that for another post. But I'm not gonna complain if someone mentions any. :)

Thanks for the replies

I find them the best at delivering what's really on the source material. They are unforgiving, but worth it on great recordings.

I listen to demanding classical, modern electronic music and some pop. My ML rig also does the HT thing, and with the right sub and correct amplification, they can play louder than you'd care to sit through a whole movie.

I'm system 11 at the martinloganowners site listed above.

Hi,

I have a similar setup except I have a Cinema center, I do have a Descent sub.

As for powering the system, I use Aragon 8008 MKII for the Aeons (biamp), and Aragon 2005 for center and surrounds. There's ample power with these Aragon amps and I'm very happy with the sound. Enjoying every last bit whether I watch a movie or listening to music.

Hope you'll like ML too.

I have a very similar setup. I would go with the ML Depth. If you can swing it, the Descent--I couldn't. I went round and round with this among other things. Why not just stick with the same brand? The ML subs are "fast" to keep up with their speakers. The Depth is really musical, and I think sufficient for HT. Most of the people over at mlowners.com would say the sunfire, but I strongly disagree. I think you can do better for your MLs then Sunfire. The best I could afford was B&K. I have no idea about that other brand that you mentioned. What about Parasound, Outlaw, or Rotel, or Sherwood? I can tell you over there they commonly mention Plinius, Classe and Blue Circle for power. That system will sound great.

If your planning on ML's, they love power. I'm running a 5 channel Sunfire Grand (200wpc) and a Parasound 1500A 2 channel (215wpc) I just recently changed the front speakers from the Sunfire to the Parasound. Much better results with the Parasound. If your going to buy the Sunfire go with the Sunfire Grand Signature (400wpc I believe). IMO ML's don't sound very good with Metal or crappy recordings. If it's a bad CD, ML's will make them sound even worse than low end speakers. If it's a great recording, outstanding. I'm not trying to talk you out of the ML's, but they are not forgiving speakers. You may want to check out some of the B&W lines. A few years ago I auditioned some B&W 604's, I thought they were great, but didn't have the cash to justify buying them. Check out the 600 or 700 series. I'm using PSB's for the rest of my system. They also have some decent speakers, line the gold series.

Thanks for all the info, I love it.

The store I'm going to, to audition the speakers said they would have their last 2 demo rooms ready by Sat the 6th. So this week I can go there and finally hear em' set up right. Their theater room has the setup I want (Ascent i, Theater i, Script i, Descent) except they use the Odyssey for mains.

I finally got a real session with the speakers and I'm in love.

Hopefully I should be getting them around mid December.

I'm going with:

MAINS - Ascent i's

CENTER - Theater i

REARS - Script i's

SUB - Descent

Thanks everybody for the help.

Did you get a chance to hear the Clarity mains? Please do, if you can.

Also, I was *not* impressed with the ML subs. You can do better.
