Martin Logan speakers for HT - good choice??

864 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Grond
I am looking at upgrading my current older Snell Speakers. I was looking at the Martin Logan Aeon i or Ascent for my fronts and a Theater i for the center. I have a Velodyne F1800R sub I will be using as well.

Amp is 5 x 200 Sunfire Cinema Grand and processor is Theta CasaNova.

I am using a HTPC with a Delta audiophile soundcard.

What has been peoples experience with using the Martin Logans for HT?

thanks

Why, hell yes. :D For 2000-8000 for some speakers they better perform great for a home theater experience. Plus I heard some and loved'em!!
if you are thinking of Martin Logans for ht, then consider Salk HTS-MTMs.

they have ribbons (like ML) and superb build quality for thousands of dollars less. also, a $ back guaranty.

see my review at audioreview.com.

best,

eric
I love the sound of my Logan setup. You can save a lot by going used, particularly if you live close enough to pick up. Martin Logan owners tend to be meticulous with their speakers so used ones should be in great shape. I got all 7 of mine used. :)

Logans are better suited to front projection without a big rear projector or entertainment center between the fronts, which compromises the imaging.

They also benefit being placed a few few from the side and back walls.

Good luck

bill,

damn you have a lot of surround speakers in that tiny room! Are you married by any chance, my wife would throw a fit if I had that many huge speakers just in the BACK of my HT! I am sure it sounds great and that is in the end what really matters though isnt it? What other equipment are you using? I plan on using them with my Sunfire Cinema Grand (5x200w) and Theta Casa Nova.

My wife is very understanding. The fit was with my hanging the big projector and painting the room dark gray. :)

The room is 14 by 24 - I wouldn't call it "tiny" it's just right.

I'm using a 5x200 watt Sherbourn amp on the front 3 speakers and the two subs with the Denon receiver on the back 4. People say the Sunfire is a good match for the Logans. Check out http://martinloganowners.com for more good info.

I wouldn't use Sunfire. Or, preferably, any other Solid State amp.

Use Butler Audio if your looking for quality - sounds great! Better than my Aragon by a good margin, not as fatiging @ high volumes and such. If you think about it, these spkrs respond fast (High damping factor) so with Solid State it makes then harsh and not as smooth (i.e. midrange).

First you have to like the sound of ML's :) - have you auditioned any of them?

The Aeon's are nice, the Ascents are better and the Theater is the only ML Center I would consider.

I run CLS and Sequel's for my HT setup and love the sound I get.

You can use SS Amps, but you would want to consider a Tube Pre to help out. Some of us cannot afford Tube Amps with tube rolling/replacement costs, so the next best thing is a nice SS Amp with Tube Pre. I know many ML owners doing this with great results. I also know many ML owners who have tube amps and love them too. Trust you own ears - and of course budgets.

Stop over at the MartinLoganOwners (just add the www and com to name) Forum if you want to discuss more of this with all of us ML owners.

thanks alot. Bill, sorry I thought your room looked smaller from your pictures. Nice setup though!

dtb300 - yes, I have listened to the Ascent i at my dealer with the big center speaker and I loved the sound. Thanks for the suggestions about the ML owners website!

Martin Logan makes some great sounding speakers but they are somewhat of a demanding load and power hungry if I remember correctly. Also note that Bill's subwoofers aren't much smaller than his couch!. :)
