Mass Effect "combat" style games?

1369 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  RafaelSmith
I have been playing the heck out of Mass Effect.

I have never been very good at tactical/squad type shooter games...I am just too old I guess and do not have the reflexes to keep up it seems.

Anyhow, I realize the combat in ME is pretty simple when compared to others but for me it worked well, was fun and did not frustrate me.

I liked being able to essentially pause the action by holding either the weapon or talent select wheels. It let me think what I wanted to do, who I wanted to do it and on what I wanted it done on without getting frustrated and overrun.

I liked using the Sniper Rifle =P

Are there any other XBOX 360 shooter/squad games that have a similar type of combat system? Tactical Shooter for Idiots perhaps? =P

I honestly have stayed away from the likes of COD and such cause ever since way back in the Quake, Unreal days I could never get the hang of FPS and was just frustrating.

Brothers in Arms has a very similar play style. WWII squad-based shooter, your commands are pretty much limited to telling teams to take cover, provide cover fire, retreat, and assault. As you progress you can command several teams at once.
Bioshock.

When you press one of the bumpers to change weapons or plasmids, the action freezes - you can change on the fly and pause to think about what would be the best approach.

Graw 1,2 and Rainbow Six Vegas. It has a cover system and you get full control of your squad.

Thanks.

Gonna download the demos for those.

I have Bioshock coming from Gamefly sometime this week.

Do these games let you save game anytime you want or are they checkpoint based?

Another feature which is pretty much a must have for any game I play is the ability to save anytime I want. When I get frustrated with something in game I just like to save and come back to it later...and I do not wanna have to replay stuff I did to get to that point in the game.

I am glad ME had that cause the one really bad thing about the game was its Autosave...I literally would have had to basically do entire missions over if I had relied on autosave. I turned autosave off....and just forced myself to save often. I wish more games would just let us save when we want.

In BioShock you can save anytime (with VERY rare exceptions such as during the final confrontation, I believe). The other games are checkpoint-based, but the checkpoints are pretty closely spaced. Rarely do you have to repeat long stretches of the games because you've died. I think you'll like both of the GRAWs and R6V, though I recommend if you're a more casual gamer that you turn the difficulty down on the latter. It's pretty tough even on the normal difficulty!
I would stay away from Rainbow Six Vegas. Awesome game, but hard as hell even on the easiest difficulty. It also has a very unfogirving checkpoint system that will force you to play half-hour sections over again. The game is really good and I wanted to finish it, but after starting "repeated half-hour number 4" (1.5 hours of the same section), I threw it away.
GRAW 2. A little short, but a really fun game.
Try Gears of War if you haven't already.

Camera angle and aiming is very similar to Mass Effect, you can take cover and pop out to shoot, awesome graphics, co-op online is very fun and the sniper rifle kicks ass.
It might not hurt to check out the demo for Crackdown either. It doesn't pause the action, but you only have two weapons to toggle between, and holding the left trigger locks on to a target. There is really no need to save, because it autosaves everytime you accomplish something (killing a boss/picking up an orb).
Just wanted thank everyone for the suggestions.

I bought a copy of GRAW2. Have not played much but so far I am liking it. I like that it is more than just running around guns ablazing.
