Acustiblock, that's mass loaded vinyl right  What is its' tolerance for heat. I was thinking of lining a sofit that hides the heat duct. I'll only have ~1 of air space between the duct and drywall. I thought the vinyl barrier would be more effective than stuffing insulation.

I'll have single layer of 5/8" drywall is it worth adding a mass loaded vinyl barrier

You will increase the STC of your wall by adding the vinyl barrier however you must install it loosely. Secondly there should be no reason why you can not still add about 0.5" of insulation between the HVAC duct and the vinyl. You vinyl should be attached to the fact of your soffit and pushed in about 0.5" on its center to make it somewhat loose. Vinyl is a limp mass and to be most effective is should be installed loosely.

Is this really OK? I thought there needed to be roughly 1" of space between the duct and the sheetrock.
