maybe I'm cheap but...Can you lock an Infocus SP4805?

Ok heres the story...I'm a college student, and while I am not eating scraps off the floor for dinner, I'm not rolling in it, i just have hobbies that I put my hard earned money into.

I recently purchased a SP4805 and am loving it. Its a great upgrade from my older Sharp XG-NV1U I used to have. Same resolution but higher contrast and brightness make a world of a difference. I figure the 3000-4000 hour bulb life will get me several years out of this as I only plan to use it for watching movies, and a few TV shows per season.

onto my original question, Is there a way to "lock" the projector so it can only be turned on with a certain hotkey (i.e. press the menu and contrast up-down buttons simultaneously or in a certain order).

I ask this because, being a college student i have roomates, who seem to not understand the concept of turning things off, and have left my projector on overnight several times now. I have talked to them about this and they say they understand, but obviously they do not grasp the concept. My projector is mounted on the ceiling, a custom mount I made, not pretty I admit, but it works enough for me.

I'd prefer to not have to bring this up to my room every time I'm done using it, and bring it back down when I want to watch something, it is just quite frustrating to have to put up with their ignorance and blatant disregard for my properties value. now that it has about 50 hours on it (about half of which were people actually watching things) I'd like to prevent the 50% ratio of time on vs time watched.

Am i SOL here? should i just bring it up to my room and stow it in the closet? I had hoped it didnt have to be like this as I dont mind them using it, as long as they are responsible...but at 20 years old I don't want to be acting like their parents or something here.

HELP!

LOL

Thats kindof amusing...but about the same amount of hassle as taking the projector down, and with that they could just use another power cable, its not like there aren't tons around :)

While i'm not in college, i'm of college age and have two male roommates one of who is a college kid. I have an X1 in my bedroom and while I don't mind them using it when they want to or have friends over, I kept coming home to my projector being on, along with all my audio equipment and an xbox game still playing, but the room would be completely empty and probably had been for hours. I eventually printed out a sign and placed it right under the projector that said in nice big letters:

WHEN DONE USING PROJECTOR PLEASE:

1. Turn off Projector

2. Turn off audio equipment

3. Turn off game console

4. Pick up food & garbage

That seemed to do the trick, i never came home to a messy room or a room with all it's electronics running again.

Now, at least my friends were respectful enough to read the sign and do what it says. I know some people out there can be aholes and would just totally ignore it all together and use your stuff even after you tell them not to. If thats the case with your friends then the only option left is a nice friendly beat down to get the point across. :)

1 ] Take the source connection cable [ Component / VGA / DVI / etc. ]

2 ] Take the source with you [ dvd / xbox / etc. ]

3 ] If nothing else works ... Pull the Lamp out from the side ;) .

I haven't tried this, but you might give it a try (and hope that your roommates aren't bright enough to figure it out).

Go into the settings menu, select SOURCES, and turn off the AUTO SOURCE. Then set your STARTUP SOURCE to an input that you are not using (like COMPUTER).

When they turn it on no image will appear. (They will probably think they broke it.)

You can get the image to appear by selecting the correct input source (same menu).

Like I said, I haven't tried it, but it seems like it should work.

as funny as that is...its true...I've had them call me when im not home asking me how to get it to work, i sigh loudly so they know im annoyed that they cant figure out to push the dvd button on my receiver to get the DVD player to work... i nearly died when they told me "i tried flipping the power switch a few times back and forth, still nothing"

... I guess the nice thing to do is to give them one more chance, and if they do it again ill start locking it in my room or something drastic...
You know it does have an Auto Shut-Off feature that works as long as the source is no longer active ;) .

yeah that feature is enabled...but doesnt work when the source is cable, or dvd when it just goes back to root when the movie is over and then loops on the menu. :-\\

Trust me, this was the first thing i turned on (or checked that it was enabled) when i hooked it up because they have a bad habit of leaving all the other **** on in the house.
How about unplugging the power cord and taking it with you when you don't want it in use?
i would just poke all my roomates eyeballs out with a hot poker! now they wont have any reason to use your projector...heh heh, ya know i am just joking...lol
lol, i was thinking about doing this as well.
Your a hell of lot more generous than I would be...a bunch of morons with no respect for EXPENSIVE and DELICATE piece of equipment that they use for FREE...I'd lay down the law and tell the bums EXACTLY how I wanted the thing treated and the next time they fu%$ed up I would take it down and say "Sorry ya pricks, movies over!"

But then again my college roommates were morons and pricks that drank my beer and ate my food and had the nerve to tell me to my face they didn't drink anything while they burped! Maybe you actually like yours :)
Put a len shield in front of the lens that locks in place. Custom made of course. They turn it on and the picture is blocked. And when they call you, you can say oops key is in my pocket. But if it is not very secure, they might just rip it down.

Or you could by a cord lock out, this would go on the end of your power cord and locks to stop use. Unless the cord is too standard they might find a cord of there own to use.
I would go nuts if that ever happened to me. I wouldn't allow family members to do it let alone roommates. You are one patient guy. Myself personally, I don't consider myself stingy, rather liberal really, but one of my pet peeves is dead weight losses, I can't stand things going to waste if there is a similar amount of effort involved in waste as there is in preservation. If I were you, I'd not bother with ceiling mounting and just table top mount it when you want to watch, then pack it away when you are done, preferably with a padlock on the bag/case/cupboard you intend to place it in. :) People who don't respect others things are usually the stingiest of all, they're not generous enough to provide their own to be used, yet go all mental when someone else stinges them without realising they don't deserve it. I remember I used to lend out video tapes of things I taped on TV (used to collect and watch quite a bit of TV programming pre DVD days), there were two types of people, those that would return it after watching it, and return it themselves, and those that would bother to drop by and borrow, but will never bother to drop by and return unless they could make the most of the trip by borrowing a stack more (and sometimes even have the nerve to drop by to borrow more without returning the old stuff), it was those people that were always mangling my tapes with their old as heck VHS players which have probably got foodstuffs inside but that can't be bothered to look after their own stuff and stuff they borrow. I am glad the whole VHS fiasco is over. I don't bother lending DVDs out to anyone but the closest of friends, I'd rather disappoint them then have them disappoint me... it doesn't pay to give the benefit of the doubt... of course not everything in life should be that way, but when you become a "source" of sorts because you collect for your own enjoyment whilst others can't be bothered and wouldn't bother except for the fact that it won't cost them, you shouldn't become the one who has to shoulder all the costs associated with other peoples inconsiderateness. I doubt any of them would hesitate to make the trip back to the video store to return videos for which they were forced to pay for, here people do the good thing by friends and lend for free and get shafted worse than the video stores. Now that I've gotten that off my chest... :)

Cheers...

Time to buy a lock for your door if you have college roomates. Seriously. You get into friend of a friend and friend of a friend of a friend situations and parties. The Zocalo Theater had a lock on the door back in the big house bachelor days.
I was in a similar situation myself. THe gf had her best friend move in with us, and it was always being used when i want home. One night I was out and got a call from the gf telling me that she had some bad news. They were watching a movie and all the sudden *BANG*. Well I found out later that they turned it off by accedent without the cool down then tried turning it right back on. Once it finally came back up (took them a few tries) they had it on for 5 minutes or so, and it blew.
Maybe you're thinking about this all wrong.

Mount a big poster on the wall that hinges into place and locks. Maybe a photo of you shooting the finger or say a pigs butt. They will be forced to stare at it while watching your projector...ha ha
I would make them pay into a "New bulb fund" every time they don't leave it as you want it. If they don't pay then then projector is locked up somewhere. Unfortunately this does not solve your convienence issues, but at least it might make them more aware of the problem and you might only have to take down the projector a couple of times.
