Do any of the current scalers have BNC outputs on them?Or do they all ONLY output via HDMI or DVI?It doesn't seem to make much sense to SDI mod a player and a scaler, just to have a "protected" non-BNC out???or do you have to go via RGB to avoid the "protected" out thusly converting to an analog signal?or can you even have a straight BNC signal to a plasma(specifically the new "industrial" 7 series Panny I'm interested in?)I'm guessing an upscaling DVD player won't work because they all upscale via HDMI(Hint,I'm not interested in HDCP!)Any help would be appreciated!

bobnoone,

You misunderstood. First, if SDI input is involved, none of the scalers we see here output HDCP output even when DVI output is being used!

There are plenty of scalers that have BNC RGBHV output and SDI input. Just to give you a few examples: the Lumagen vision pro+SDI is exactly that. The Crystalio has this. The Rock+SDI has it. The iScan HD has it (but with a VGA connector, not separate BNC connectors - so you'll need a breakout cable), etc.

So how does this work when the device is DVI HDCP compliant. Would all signals have to contain the HDCP flag or do they typically accept DVI with and without HDCP?

A scaler that is HDCP compliant only has to turn it on and comply with the rules (i.e., turn off analog outputs and turn on HDCP with DVI) if and when it receives an HDCP signal in its DVI input.

With all other cases and situations, the scaler can do what it pleases (turn HDCP on or off, use analog outputs, etc.).

Oops, incomplete info in my post.

What I was referring to was the TV/projector. If its (TV) HDCP compliant, would it know what to do with a non HDCP compliant DVI signal.

Even more specifically, a SDI modded Denon 5900 sending a 480i signal to the DVDO HD, which in turn sends a DVI non HDCP flagged signal to a Sony Grand Wega III rear projector. The TV's specs say that its HDCP compliant, but would it display a non HDCP signal?? Whew...(wipe forehead)

Depends on how you define affordable, and exactly what inputs and outputs you need. All things being equal, a new Iscan HD is probably the least expensive option. But Lumagen, PMS, T A W and others do have lower cost options that are nearly the same in price. You are looking in the $1200 to $2000 range for most of the SDI input options that are often considered "affordable."
