Hi, I am looking for a reliable motherboard to use in a new server. I need the 64-bit PCI slots for the RAID card and the gigabit ethernet card. I prefer AMD boards but that is not an absolute requirement.


The key for me is a high quality board from a good company with good support. I have been very happy with both MicroStar and Asus boards in the past but I am open to all suggestions.

I've always been happy with a SuperMicro board in my servers (sorry, they don't have AMD based mother boards, they use pretty much just Intel chipsets and Server Works chipsets). Rock solid stability and continuous hardware uptime measured in years in many systems.

Are you willing to wait for PCI-Express boards? we should see a few in Q4.

I already have the 64-bit PC boards so no need for PCI express but I will give Super Micro a try. I have used the desktop board in the past.

SuperMicro and Tyan both make nice stable mobos.

BTW all the 64 bit PCI boards that I know of are dual processor capable. I don't know of any single CPU mobos with 64bit.

I might want to use SCSI, and would like more than the current PCI 120MB/sec or so limit of 32 bit. I might just stick with 2 10,000 rpm HDD's and stay @32 bit for now. 64-bit PCI Express and Serail SCSI would be nice though...

We have three dual-AMD systems using the Tyan boards. We have PCI64 Gigabit Ethernet NICs and 3ware cards in each box as well, along with 4GB memory. They run like a champ.

If you aren't going to use the RAID 0 or 1 capabilities of the -R Adaptec series then you should look at the LSI range of controllers. Far cheaper and with better driver support. You can get an LSI U150 controller for far less than $100.

Thanks for the recommendation Pradeep ($45 at Newegg). I 1st heard about PCI Express thru LSI Logic.
